1 Geography of Crime Geographers study crime to find hotspots where crimes are likely to occur. The information is used to plan safer living spaces and to prevent international crimes such as drug trafficking and piracy Go to the following BBC website On map of Noseyford Click each of the factors on the right. Use this information describe the characteristics of the boroughs of Picknam and Sniffwich. Write the main characteristics on your worksheet next to Map 1. Continue with the activity. Which area has more crime? What features would be found in a high crime area and which in a low crime area? Copy the urban features onto Map 2. Explain how they affect crime. This should be written next to the map Describe the indicators of crime. Finally, what are the town features that have an impact on crime? Which ones discourage crime? Go to the following BBC website BBC news crime clips 6. Watch the clip ‘An Introduction to GIS’ – you may use your own earphones to listen to it Write a summary to explain what GIS is. 7. Watch FOUR other clips (at least one involving GIS) and write a summary of each Use the title given for the clip on the website. Each summary should be at least 100 words long. You may hand write in your exercise book or use Word and print them out and stick them in.
