Stage 1 – Experimentation “I’ll just try it” A person is tempted to experiment with a drug, so they decide to try it

Stage 2 – Desired Effect “I like the feeling” They enjoy the feeling they get from using the drug and continue to use it

Progression to Drug Dependency
Stage 3 – Tolerance “I need more of the drug to feel good” Their body develops a tolerance to the drug and no longer has the same pleasurable effects. They may start experiencing withdrawal symptoms when they stop using the drug.

Stage 4 – Denial “ I don’t have a drug problem” They do not admit that they have a problem. They may claim they can stop using at any time, but cannot stop.

Stage 5 – Drug Dependence/Addiction “I have to have the drug” They are now drug dependent
