Reception Summer Term Newsletter Important Information Important Dates PE days We are hoping our school pool will be ready for us to start swimming week beginning Tuesday 5th May. To enable these sessions to take place, we rely on support from parents. If you are available to help Reception swim on a Monday afternoon from 1pm then please let Miss Diplock know. Reception Class Sharing Assembly: Wednesday 20th May 2015 at 2:40pm Class visit to Linton Zoo after half term (more details to follow) Maths Targets Must: Subtract two single digit numbers. Should: Subtract a single digit number from any number up to 20. Could: Count back to subtract a single digit number from any number up to 20. Literacy Targets Must: Write a simple sentence. Should: Write two simple sentences about the same theme. Include capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. Could: Write three complex sentences about the same theme. Include adjectives and basic punctuation (capital letters, finger spaces and full stops). Animal Fair Reading Reading in Reception mainly takes place in guided reading groups. Please make sure your child brings their book and book bag to school every day to enable us to share sets of books easily between groups. 2015

What we will be learning
Welcome to Reception Personal, Social & Emotional Development The class will continue to practise paying cooperatively together and should show confidence in demonstrating the ability to negotiate and solve problems that arise during play. Our SEAL topics during the Summer term are ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changes’. Talking about changes will promote discussion about how the children have developed during the Reception year and helping to prepare them for the transition into Year 1. Communication & Language Children should demonstrate an inquisitive nature and ask ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions in response to stories and experiences. They should use past, present and future forms accurately when talking and develop their own narratives during play. Our topic this term will be Animal Fair! This topic will span the entire Summer Term. The class will be focussing heavily on learning surrounding the early learning goals which children are expected to achieve at the end of the Reception year. During the first half of the term, children will continue to develop their personal, social and emotional development through stories focussed on minibeasts. They will form a greater understanding of the world around them by planting seeds, observing a life cycle of a frog and noticing changes over time. They will hunt for minibeasts outside and talk about similarities and differences between bugs. The second half of the Summer Term will focus around animals you would find in a zoo. I I am a busy bee! Physical Development Children will take part in some traditional dancing around the Maypole which is great for developing coordination and rhythm. They will also begin swimming lessons in the school pool. They should continue to develop their understanding of the importance of good health, physical exercise, a healthy diet and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe. Literacy The children will continue to develop a bank of letter sounds, decodable words and tricky words. They will extend their knowledge of reading strategies and begin to pick up on other cues to help them decode unknown words. They should demonstrate more understanding when talking to others about what they have read. Children will be encourage to write for a range of different purposes to enable them to demonstrate their ability to write in a variety of contexts. Maths There will be a big focus on developing the ability to count reliably using numbers Children will continue to practise adding and subtracting two single-digit numbers and counting on or back to find the answer. They will also practise solving problems such as doubling, halving and sharing. Other topics of learning will include language related to size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money. Understanding the World Children will make observations of plants and life cycles and comment on changes over time. They will be encouraged to use technology for a range of different purposes. Expressive Arts & Design The class will be encouraged to sing songs, make music and dance. They will be encouraged to use a range of media and materials when following their interests in the art and craft area. Children should represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through a wide range of areas of learning.
