Spies on Both Sides Men and Women
Some spies were very good at getting the job done other spies made mistakes and were killed. For example Lawrence Williams was caught in enemy uniform was hanged. There were many ways of getting secrets from enemy commanders. Rose Greenhow charmed generals into telling her secrets.

Saboteurs and Guerillas
John Mosby was the leader of the Partisan Ranger to the south he was a hero to the north he was the Gray Ghost a danger of the night. His men were difficult to find or catch them. After the war he was a folk hero. Saboteurs often burned wood military bridges by soaking them in kerosene.

Successful Spies! Some spies were very Successful like the famous Elizabeth Van Lew. She pretended to have a mild mental illness making confederate generals think she was harm less so they spoke freely around her. Willam Henry Harrison was a very successful spy. With information that he brought they planned the battle of Gettysburg and pinpointed union positions.

Weaponry Spies often used army rejects like the Allen & Weelock center fire pistol. Guerillas frequently preferred shotguns because they did more damage. Sometimes they were sawed off to make their use on horse back. Kerosene was often used to burn bridges and supplies.

Spies Helped Both Sides of the War
The success of espionage in the civil war ensured that this type of warfare would continue. Today spies are better trained with better equipment and many more resources. After the war the US started to educate people to be the better spies.
