Governor of Cuba Traveled all across Alabama searching for wealth.

He organized a large expedition to explore La Florida. In 1540 de Soto and his men crossed into Alabama and visited many Indian villages. Soon after arriving in Florida, he found and rescued Juan Ortiz! 

Indians warned de Soto and Ortiz that they were moving in the direction of hostile Indians. Later they ran into a village called Talisi. De Soto received a message from the area chief Tuskaloosa “Black Warrior”. Chief Tuskaloosa was described as being tall and well built.

4 Hernando de Soto (Pages 42-43)
De Soto demanded food and men for his journey. Tuskaloosa refused, so de Soto took him hostage. Later, Tuskaloosa promised to give de Soto everything, but told de Soto he had to get it from his village of Maubila. Once they were there, Tuskaloosa went inside and proceeded to attack the Spanish. The Spanish won but thousands died.

The Spanish remained at Maubila until wounds healed. De Soto became ill with a fever and died. Where did they put his body? Why?

6 Don Tristan de Luna (Pages 44-45)
In 1559, Don Tristan de Luna landed in Mobile Bay and tried to establish a colony, but he was not successful. A hurricane sank his ships and the Indians did not welcome the Spaniards.

7 Diseases (Pages 44-45) Many Indians died due to the diseases such as mumps, measles, small pox, and tuberculosis.

8 Immunity Diseases (Pages 44-45)
The Spanish brought these diseases with them and the natives had no immunity against the diseases. Immunity
