1 Success… In order to be successful in this lesson you must be able to:
Learning Objective: yr 7F Making Rocks L4 Weathering and Erosion part 2 In order to be successful in this lesson you must be able to: Explain how natural landscapes on the surface of the Earth/ structures made of rocks can be changed by different types of weathering . Success…

2 Success… In order to be successful in this lesson you must be able to:
Success Criteria: yr 7F Making Rocks L4 part 2 In order to be successful in this lesson you must be able to: Name the three types of weathering. Define Physical, Chemical and Biological weathering. Use diagrams to describe Freeze Thaw weathering Success…

3 What has happened here. What does this have to do my your lesson today
What has happened here? What does this have to do my your lesson today? Be ready to share your ideas in 2 minutes.

4 Freeze-thaw weathering Did you get it right? Check your work.
Water may enter cracks in rocks. b) In areas where the temperature falls below the freezing point of water, the water will turn into ice when it is cold enough. Water expands as it freezes. c) The ice now exerts pressure on the walls of the crack, pushing them further apart and widening the crack. d) Over time, the crack becomes wider and the rock may break apart.

5 Biological weathering
Look at the diagrams. Discuss your ideas about how biological weathering occurs with you partner and be prepared to share your ideas when asked. You have 2 minutes

6 Biological weathering
Plant roots and animal burrows can destabilise rocks. Lichen that grows on rock surfaces gradually wears it away.

7 Exploring Chemical weathering
The practical What to do Collect goggles, 2 petri dishes, 2 pipettes, a beaker of rain water and a beaker of acid rain. Place a small piece of the rock called limestone on to a petri dish and put about 3 drops of rain water on the rock. Write down what you see happening (observations). Repeat steps 2-3 using the acid rain. Return the petri dishes on to the tray provided, tidy up and wipe the table clean with a damp cloth.

9 Exploring Chemical weathering
Chemical weathering occurs when rocks are exposed to water. Rainfall is naturally acidic due to the carbon dioxide dissolved in it. Chemical reactions taking place between the water and the rock cause the rock to break down
