Approach: Combine Four Proven Interventions
Use engaging, well-designed OER content Provide automatic access to all students via LMS Open Educational Resources Encourage frequent feedback, practice, assessment as a learning activity Align all course elements with defined learning outcomes Mastery Learning Strengthen metacognition; build better learners Coach students on where to focus, how to learn Personalization Nurture and encourage the learning process Make it easier to offer individualized outreach when and where needed Faculty+Student Connection Karen

Intervention 2: Learning Activities to Develop Mastery
14
Intervention 3: Embedded, Personalized Feedback

Intervention 4: Efficient, Individualized Outreach

Social Dialogue: Challenges, Victories, Lessons
What key challenges, victories and lessons learned have you taken away from innovation initiatives? What insights that we’re sharing apply to innovation projects you’re leading or considering? Use OLC streaming chat or Twitter hashtag: #OLCtop3 Karen #OLCtop3
17
Top Three Takeaways: Victories
Lumen Perspective Documented improvement in student outcomes: Lower drops & withdrawals, higher course throughput Powerful impact of individualized messaging Use of learning data to drive continuous improvement Karen #OLCtop3
18
Top Three Takeaways: Victories
UMUC Perspective Creating sustainable, high quality open source content opportunities for students Faculty messaging via Waymaker a plus for students Innovative use of Common Cartridge to accelerate courseware installations Karen #OLCtop3
19
Example: Faculty-Student Messaging
From: To: Microeconomics Instructor … I appreciate all the times you went out of your way to me tips to do better the next week and even compliment me when I showed improvement. No other teacher has done that for me and especially since this is an online course and there is no in person interaction, it just made me feel pretty good to know I had a teacher always looking out for my best interest. From: Microeconomics I wanted to share with you this student's perspective on how cared for he felt in this course. He was contacted almost solely through the Waymaker automatic messaging. I am really impressed.
20
Top Three Takeaways: Challenges
Lumen Perspective Delivering courseware in time for pilot partners to implement effectively Managing iterative nature of innovation and pilots with the realities of live courses, students and instructors Encouraging humans to change, in order to improve learning Karen #OLCtop3
21
Top Three Takeaways: Challenges
UMUC Perspective Alignment of courseware changes and term schedules Scaling online delivery with continuous improvement approach to courseware Scaling to broader faculty group while ensuring courseware’s pedagogy is broadly understood Karen #OLCtop3
22
Top Three Takeaways: Lessons Learned
Lumen Perspective If behaviors don’t change, student outcomes don’t change. And change is hard. Successful projects optimize product and practice, together Different organizational environments may require very different types and levels of support in order to succeed Karen #OLCtop3
23
Top Three Takeaways: Lessons Learned
UMUC Perspective Innovation work requires Iteration and Flexibility Innovation work requires culture shifts Karen #OLCtop3
24
Social Dialogue: Lessons
What lessons do you wish vendors/solution providers would take away from innovation initiatives you’ve worked on together? What lessons do you wish institutions would take away from innovation initiatives you’ve worked on together? Use OLC streaming chat or Twitter hashtag: #OLCtop3 Karen #OLCtop3

Extending the Collaboration
USM is a “microcosm” of public higher education (research intensive, HBCUs, regional comprehensives, UMUC) USM’s Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation charged scaling promising technologies/practices. Partnership with UMUC to help identify what some of those models might be. Working with UMUC/Lumen to explore next steps, specifically with developmental courses. How do we generalize UMUC’s “lessons learned” and apply to more traditional institutions? Karen
