Creating a Brochure In Microsoft Word

Step 1: Opening a Document
After turning on computer open Microsoft word by locating the icon on your desktop or using the start command and locating the icon on the left pane. A blank document should open automatically.

Step 2: Change Orientation and Margins
Use your mouse to click on file. A drop down box opens Position the icon over “Page Setup”. Then click it. If you can not locate “Page Setup”, continue to hold the icon over the drop down box until the other options appear.

A small box appears that allows you to change the settings for your document. Locate the options for “Orientation” and choose the “Landscape” option. Find the margin options. The default margin option is usually 1 inch. We want to change the margin options to 0.5 or ½ inch to create more space

Step 3: Creating Columns
Next locate the “insert” on your command bar. Click on it for the drop down options and click on “Columns” A box will appear with the column options. One of those options will allow to type in the number of columns you want. Type 3 in that box.

Step 4: Insert Text Use the keyboard to type in 3 paragraphs of text describing your pet adoption organization. The first paragraph will be an Overview of why you organization was started The second paragraph will state your goals and objectives. The third paragraph will outline and bullet point the process of adoption

Step 5: Insert and Customize Images
Once your text is typed in find the “insert” command again and click it for the drop down box. Find Pictures or Clip Art (Pictures allows you to search your hard drive for pictures you downloaded. Clip Art access images from a particular folder on your hard drive created when the program was installed. Clip Art also allows you to go online and access thousands of clip art images and easily import them into your document.

If you chose to insert a picture from your computer a box pops up that allows you to “browse” or search for images anywhere on your computers hard drive or additional hard drives like thumb or flash drives. If you chose clip art a box will appear in the right pane of the window. A small box that says, “search for” will allow you to type in keywords for your images. For example, if you type in “dogs” images of dogs will appear.

Step 5: Insert and Customize Images
Choose your image by double clicking on it. The image will be inserted at the point where your cursor was last placed. Right Click on your image. An options box will appear. Move your mouse over the “format picture” command. Click on it.

There are tabs on the box. One of them says, “Wrap”. This option determines how text will be “wrapped” around the image. Certain wrap options allow for the free movement of the image over or under the text. Experiment with the options and select one that you like. There are other options under the other tabs. We will discuss these in class.

Step 6: Format Text (Finishing Touch)
Use the text formatting tools in the tool bar at the top of the screen to change the “Font” size and colors, the justification (left, right, center and full justify) You can also choose borders for your page. We’ll discuss that in class.
