Foundation in development theory Specialized knowledge of East Africa Exposure to Development Practitioners Theoretical preparation for the internship Learning Qualitative methods & skills

4 Summer Field Course: Topics & Methods in East Africa
Knowledge of various socio-cultural environments . Highland agricultural communities . Rangeland pastoral communities . Urban informal settlement communities . Fishing communities of the Tanzanian coast Students engage with local communities . Homestays . Local teaching staff Qualitative field methods component

5 Summer Internship Students are matched with host organizations according to the expressed interests of both Internship duration: approximately 5 weeks Internship contains a research and a community service components The host organization provides on-site supervisor UCU appoints an academic supervisor Host organization assists in finding accommodation during the internship

7 Criteria Currently 2nd and 3rd year students from ALL departments and majors - Genuine interest in development issues - Good academic performance - Fulfilled breadth requirement - Interdisciplinary interest - Cross-cultural interest - Maturity Examples of master programmes students have joined: Netherlands Masters in logic, UvA Art history, UvA American studies, UU SUMMA (masters in medicine combining practice with research), UU Medicine, UM Geography, UvA Sociology, UvA Abroad London School of Economics, UK (international relations, economics) Oxford (anthropology and visual anthropology, history of philosophy) International Relations, King’s College, UK International Relations, John Hopkins, Bologna/Washington An example of a student who did not go for a masters degree after UCU, a student with a BSc is now working for the Dutch ministry of transport as a project leader

8 Application Process Students apply by submitting:
- UCU in Africa Application Form - CV UCU Grade list (from Osiris) + registered / future planned courses - Letter of Motivation: Interest in Developmental Issues Motivation Internship Fields of Interest Contribution to Personal Career Dev.

9 Deadlines Application  before 15th of November 2017
Notification of acceptance to the program  5th of December 2017 Final acceptance by the student 15th of December 2017 - First down payment  1st of February 2018 Letter of Motivation and CV  15th of February 2018 - Agreements, Health forms and Conduct of Understanding  21st of April 2018 Internship Report  before the 31st of August 2018 A UCU letter of motivations is like a US-style motivational essay

10 Costs (€) - 1700,- program costs to be paid to UCU (fixed)
- 700,- to 800,- travel costs - 100,- vaccinations - 300,- housing - The costs can differ, depending on the internship. A UCU letter of motivations is like a US-style motivational essay
