Objectives and Methods
Mechanical and thermal testing of new vacuum glass (HFA) Thermal simulation of new vacuum glass in stock windows (TU Vienna) DIN

Results The new vacuum glazing is a very good new option to improve historical or stock windows thermal (+ sound protection) VG (Synergy / Beijing) in a box window (> 6,2 mm) Ug-Values from 0,7 to 0,27 W/m²K are possible Potential of the use of VG (+VIG) in the renovation of the building stock The thermal bridge at the edge has to be considered !!!

Results and Outlook Findings and Results:
3 good Asian suppliers of VG, the relatively high price of about 140 € / m² and the long supply routes still hinder its use. Many necessary internationally technical approvals are still missing. However an ISO standardization group is now formed. The thermal simulation results, installation trials and tests are promising. The thermal savings and climate protection potential of VG- use in the building stock are significant. The simulations and tests show the strengths and weaknesses of window systems with VG. Further deeper study of the use of VG in stock windows is desirable and necessary. Intensive investigations of using VG in new windows are also desirable and necessary. The market potential for VG in existing windows is relevant in Austria, very relevant internationally. The biggest potential lies wherever heating or cooling is required, and currently only single glazing is usual. Conclusions and Outlook: From now on VG will be an increasingly important part of thermal insulation glazing. The technical specifications of VG require precise planning and calculation for replacement in existing windows and will be an important new option for the thermal rehabilitation of historic windows and all valuable existing windows. In combination with other smooth, sustainable and object appropriate renovation steps, many historical buildings could be transformed into low-energy buildings. In cooperation with conservation experts, use in the conservation area is also possible. VG also requires the construction of new window frames and a new, VG-adequate approach to their development. Large weight and volume advantages can be achieved. The achieved Ug-values of up to 0.27 W/m²K in the laboratory are realistic for the next product generation of VG, also in mass production. Any reduction of product costs and any shortening of delivery times and routes enhances the application potential. Therefore, production sites should be promoted in Europe.
