Topic: Chemical Bonding
Aim: How do you determine if a molecule is polar or nonpolar? Do Now: what is a polar covalent bond? A nonpolar covalent bond? Give an example formula of each. HW: RB p #18-25 Text p. 253 #32, 34
2
Molecular Polarity DIFFERENT FROM BOND POLARITY
The type of bond has nothing to do with it Questions will be specific Will state “polar/nonpolar BOND” or “polar/nonpolar MOLECULE” READ.
3
Molecular Polarity MOLECULES can be POLAR or NONPOLAR Look at SHAPE
Look at DISTRIBUTION OF CHARGE Are bonds the same all the way around?
4
Nonpolar Molecules Symmetrical in SHAPE Examples?
CO2, All diatomics - Symmetrical LINEAR CH4 - Symmetrical TETRAHEDRONS Nonpolar molecules will dissolve in nonpolar solvents (like dissolves like) Oil-based paints and paint thinner Acetone & nail polish Acetone & styrofoam
5
Polar Molecules Asymmetrical in SHAPE Examples?
HCl - Asymmetrical LINEAR H2O - ALL BENT NH3 - TRIGONAL PYRAMIDAL CH3Cl – tetrahedrons not the same on all sides Polar molecules will dissolve in polar substances (like dissolves like)
6
Shapes & Polarity
7
When in doubt… …draw it out! SNAP! Symmetrical, Nonpolar
Asymmetrical, Polar
