7 In this unit, we will focus on natural resources that are used for making electricity (electrical energy)…or energy resources. Why do you think it is important to study about energy resources? Why do they matter in our everyday lives?

11 There are 2 categories of natural/energy resources.
Renewable Nonrenewable A natural resource that CANNOT be replaced at the same rate at which it is consumed. A natural resource that CAN be replaced at or near the same rate at which it is consumed.

28 North Korea's invisibility cloak is due to mandatory power cuts at night, part of the country's struggle to conserve its precious energy. the Soviet Union has limited N.K. access to inexpensive, Communist- approved fuel. At the current rate we are using (consuming)energy, we won’t have enough resources to support our growing population of people! We are reaching our carrying capacity.

32 5. Carrying Capacity Defin. -The maximum number of organisms that can be supported by the resources of an environment. Organisms = humans The environment = Earth Ex. If your mom makes dinner for your family of five people, and you invite 3 friends over without asking her (so 8 people), you will have exceeded the carrying capacity for dinner. There would not be enough dinner for everyone to eat and be full.

33 More Realistically…. Our carrying capacity should increase as we …..improve technology and conservation efforts. But are we doing enough? As carrying capacity increases, what happens to human population? What does the carrying capacity appear to be doing to human population in this graph?

A.d.1 -Carrying capacity generally keeps the population in check. A.d.2 -If population exceeds (goes over) the carrying capacity, the population will decline rapidly, then slowly rebound/increase. A.d. 3 -If population exceeds carrying capacity, the carrying capacity will decline/decrease, then slowly rebound/increase.

What new laws would you put in place (no more than 3) to try and prevent energy problems we may face in the future? Work with your group Write down the laws AND tell why/how they will help.
