WEEK 4 GROWING FROM CUTTINGS Key Learning Area’s

STEPS 1 AND 2 STEP 1 Go outside & look for plants that are thriving Identify plants that can be grown again elsewhere in the garden Using the secateurs, cut off just below halfway on the stem from plants that you wish to propagate STEP 2 Collect some small pots or find a spot in your veggie patch for replanting Wear mask & gloves Fill pots with nice loose organic soil that won’t compact the new roots COPYRIGHT 2015 KARMAKIDS GROW

STEPS 3 AND 4 STEP 3 Cut off any leaves and flowers from the bottom half of the stem to ensure good growth (see fact sheet) Choose a variety of cuttings to replant, gently scraping off some of the outside bark at the bottom end of the stems Add a mulch such as pine bark to keep moisture in STEP 4 Have 3 children water the cuttings Keep all cuttings well watered everyday Take the stem & put the scraped end into the pot or straight into your veggie patch COPYRIGHT 2015 KARMAKIDS GROW

STEP 5 Go back inside, wash hands with soap & water
Create a ‘Cuttings Table’ that can be shared with families Add to Watering & Growing Chart names of children who will be looking after the cuttings Take’ before and after’ photo’s of your cuttings Record the growth of cuttings on your chart COPYRIGHT 2015 KARMAKIDS GROW

STEP 6 Nominated children to check Watering Chart for when to water & prune Cuttings generally take 2 – 3 months to grow and establish their roots Add fertiliser regularly COPYRIGHT 2015 KARMAKIDS GROW
