PRIOR WORK In the previous lesson, the following will have been completed from the text book in ability groups: Starter activity - In pairs, highlight from the text ways to reduce, reuse, recycle (the text is limited and needs to be used as a springboard for their own ideas) – 3 minutes – teacher support for LA 2 mins for sample feedback Total 5 mins In their groups they will have brainstormed other ideas to reduce, reuse, recycle – the main development activity 10 mins. Teacher focus group LA.

Sharing ideas Groups swap papers
They read the ideas – can they add on any more ideas to their friends paper Focus – sharing learning Teacher moves around groups assessing results Papers are returned and new ideas noted Who has an idea added on to their paper? 8 mins.

Home Learning Divide the class into groups – but for INDEPENDENT research( to take their ideas into the group task – have the task(s) printed out for them to take away on A4 paper – they can write down ideas on this to bring to the next lesson Driving questions: Blue and green groups: How does waste affect the environment? How can we convince people to do more? Red yellow orange groups: What can we do more: in our school, at home, in our local community to reduce, reuse, recycle? Check for clarity of the task and discuss ways they can research 8 mins.

Main Activity You have 15 minutes to work as a group and share your ideas from the home learning You can present your ideas on the A3 paper how you wish – choice NB ensure that they understand this is not a colouring exercise!

Group responsibilities clarification
Blue and green groups: How does waste affect the environment? How can we convince people to do more? Red, yellow, orange groups: What can we do more: in our school, at home, in our local community? Ensure all have clarity on their responsibilities Tell the class that you will be selecting 1 from each group to explain the group’s ideas to another group Remind the class of the cards – red hold up for stuck / question, green for finished Teacher targeted support for LA group 2 mins.

Specifically guides LA Asks questions to the groups Teacher nominates whilst moving around a spokesperson from each group (an envoy)

Envoys! Nominated person takes their A3 paper and is directed to another group The envoy presents the group’s ideas 4 mins. Returns to own group Did the group here any new ideas from the envoy which they can add to their paper? 3 mins. Student collects in papers – teacher assessment of learning and then display 1 min. N.B. the 2 HA groups will envoy between themselves as they have had different driving questions to the other groups
