Procedures are a part of life. They allow complex operations to run smoothly with minimal confusion, low stress, and less wasted time. Airports Driving Restaurants Movies School Where else are procedures practiced?

4 Classroom and Academic Expectations

5 Classroom Expectations
The atmosphere in this classroom will be formal and academic, but comfortable. We will work hard, learn, and enjoy the process. If a visitor walked into our classroom during the day, what should they see?

6 I expect students to do the following things to make sure the classroom runs smoothly:
Attend class, and arrive on time. Have materials ready when the bell rings. Listen when others are speaking. Follow directions the first time they are given. Get permission before speaking. Be polite and respectful toward each other. Stay on-task and focused on learning.

7 Academic Expectations
Come to class on time and have materials ready. Follow teacher’s directions and complete assignments. Work hard and enjoy the process. Do your best. Do not complain; it poisons the atmosphere.

14 Getting the Class’ Attention
I will: “Raise my right hand and say “Class - eyes on me. I will then count down from 5 to 1 ” You will respond “Eyes on you!” and then count down with me. When you see my hand go up you are to 1) stop what you are doing 2) look at the teacher 3) raise your hand until the class is silent 4) put down anything that is in your hands

15 Entering the Classroom first thing in the morning
When directed, enter the room quickly and quietly (VL-1) Put away book bag/coat, sharpen pencil, & fill your water bottle Put homework in the appropriate M&M Guy Update your planner (updated planner is your ticket to recess) 5. Read your personal book until directed to do something else

16 When you finish work early . . .

17 Tardy Procedure Enter the classroom quietly, put personal items away and join in the classroom activities with minimal disruption.

18 Absence Procedure When you are absent, check with your table group to find out what you missed. Do not ask the teacher. If you are missing work from an absence, the teacher will let you know what you are missing and provide the materials needed. You will have until the end of the week to complete your missed work.

19 Listening to/Responding to Questions
When we are having class discussions, raise your hand to be called on and actively listen to whoever is speaking. Teacher will give specific instructions when students are to call out answers without first raising their hands. Always “track” the teacher Ask only questions that are relevant to the lesson. Be respectful of all comments and ideas, even if they differ from yours.

20 Working Together in Groups
Each student in a cooperative group will have a task which will be assigned by teacher or determined by group members. Example of tasks: - recorder - presenter - materials person - clean up person - encourager - leader–keep group on task

21 Walking in the Hall Procedure
When we are walking in the hall (fire drills, writing lab, outdoors, Prep time, assemblies, etc.) Stay with the group, single file Go quickly and quietly to the destination.

22 Assembly Procedure When directed, line up with or without chairs depending on the school instructions. Take a reading book with you. Leave behind games, toys, etc. Proceed to the assembly While waiting for the assembly to start, read our book.

23 End of the Day Dismissal Procedure
Put away materials. Make sure your desk area is neat and trash is picked up. When the bell rings, stand behind your desk and look at the teacher (All students must be standing with chair up or down depending on the day). When teacher dismisses the class, proceed quickly and quietly out the door.

24 Students Leaving the Classroom
Get permission from the teacher without disrupting class. You must have a hall pass to leave the room.

25 Entering the Classroom
Do not enter the classroom unless you are directed. Line up and wait along the wall that has the water fountain. When the teacher directs you to, enter the classroom; go in quietly and prepare for the next activity

26 Bathroom Use The best time for bathroom use is during recess.
You should not leave class to use the bathroom unless it is an emergency. You must get permission from the teacher without disrupting class. Only one person at a time will use the bathroom. Return quickly

27 Getting a drink and/or sharpening a pencil
The best time to do these are during recess. If your pencil lead breaks use your other pencil If you do not have a second pencil, quietly ask your neighbor for one If your neighbor does not have a pencil, borrow one from the box. (You may trade your pencil for any one in the box.)

28 Student’s Sudden Illness
Tell teacher where you are ill. Go to the nurse or restroom. Follow up with the teacher when you are better. Note: You should not be “suddenly ill” very often.

29 Recess When directed stand up and wait behind your chair (pushed in)
When the class is quiet, you will be escorted to recess out the West Center door (VL-0) When recess is over wait by the class “colored dot” until the teacher comes to get you.

30 Teacher Away from the Room
Wait quietly in the hallway until I return. If I am gone longer than 5 minutes, go into the room (if it is unlocked) and sit quietly, be patient, and use the time to work on other academic assignments. Contact another teacher in a nearby room if I am gone longer than 10 minutes.

31 Classroom Visitors You may smile and you may say hello if it is appropriate and it does not disrupt the class. Continue to work in class as you normally would. Remember to make a good impression for visitors. We want to impress them.

32 Guest Teacher Be polite and respectful. The teacher is a guest and we want to make a good impression. Continue to work in class as you normally would. Remember, we want to impress all visitors in our classroom.

35 Fire Drill Exit through the south door (take coat when cold).
Go to the field, line up in lunch line order Wait until we are called back inside. Walk quickly and quietly back to the classroom. Get seated and quickly return to the classroom task.

36 Tornado Drill Stay in the classroom.
Take shelter under desks if necessary. Wait for directions from teacher. When drill is over, quickly return to the learning task.

37 Lock Down Drill Teacher locks door.
Students stay in room, near the coat rack corner, VL-O Students wait for further instructions. Students return to learning task.

The teacher will explain the importance of procedures and will explain the specific procedure. (E) Teacher will demonstrate the procedure. (D) Teacher will guide the students and have them practice procedures to be sure they are carried out properly. (G) Teacher will enable the students to perform the task. (E)
