SPI 7.38 Analyze the causes, course, and consequences of the European Crusades and their effects on the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish populations in Europe, with emphasis on the increasing contact by Europeans with cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean world.

The Crusades The Crusades were a long series of wars between Christians and Muslims in Southwest Asia. They were fighting over control over the Holy Land (Palestine). Europeans wanted control over Palestine because it was the region that Jesus preached, lived, and died.

The Crusades In the late 1000s, a group of Turkish Muslims entered and captured Jerusalem. Pilgrims returning to Europe said that these Turks had attacked them in the Holy Land, which was no safer for Christians. Before long, the Turks began to raid the Byzantine Empire. The empire feared an attack on Constantinople. The people asked Pope Urban II of the Roman catholic Church for help. The pope agreed.

The Crusades Pope called on Christians from all over Europe to retake the Holy Land from the Muslim Turks. He challenged the kings and popes to stop fighting one another and fight against the Muslims. Thousands began to fight! The flocked to France to prepare for their long journey. They sewed crosses on their clothing and yelled “God wills it” as they went to fight
