7 Objectives Characterize cell phone & text messaging usage among patients at the Denver Metro Health STD Clinic Assess the willingness of patients to receive text messaging Determine what kinds of text messages patients are comfortable receiving

8 Methods Convenience sample of 491 patients attending the Denver Metro Health Clinic Between February and May 2007 English-speaking Computer-assisted self interview Roughly 35 items—generally <10 minutes to take Focus groups

14 Focus groups findings The message must look professional No emoticons, no abbreviations Keep it discrete No clinic identifiers “Please call Denver Health for an important health message” Enthusiastic about text messaging

15 Conclusions A majority of patients from the Denver Metro Health Clinic use text messaging Most would find it acceptable to receive a health related text message from the clinic Care has to be taken to craft a message that is both discrete and professional

16 Next steps Implement a text messaging system in the Denver Metro Health Clinic Target patients who have not received their GC/CT results OR who were positive for GC/CT in the past three months and have not had a f/u visit Evaluate # of text messages sent, # of call backs received, # of results given
