Population Growth (Exponential)

2
POPULATION GROWTH Nearly all populations will tend to grow exponentially as long as there are resources available. Two of the most basic factors that affect the rate of population growth are the birth rate, and the death rate. r(rate of growth)=birth rate – death rate

Exponential and logistic growth in populations | Ecology | Khan Academy
5
Exponential growth is a rapid population increase due to an abundance (lots of) of resources.
J-Shaped curve
6
Exponential growth occurs in nature only when the starting population is small & the environmental conditions are ideal.

Exponential Growth
8
This type of growth usually does not last long
This type of growth usually does not last long. Most populations are constrained by limiting factors.
9
FACT: No population exhibits this type of growth for long.
POPULATION GROWTH Exponential growth curve: population growth plotted against time. As a population gets larger, it also grows at a faster rate. This is the maximum population growth under ideal circumstances. Includes plenty of room for each member, unlimited resources (food, water) and no hindrances (predators). FACT: No population exhibits this type of growth for long.
10
Logistic growth is due to a population facing limited resources.
S-Shaped Curve Carrying capacity is the maximum number of individuals in a population that the environment can support.
