3 Who is this book for? The book is intended for the students of the new program for social work, as well as the students of related studies (sociology, pedagogy, psychology), for all who study social inclusion.

4 The aim of the study In brief, the aim of the study is:
to familiarize students with important concepts and theoretical approaches to understanding the phenomenon of disability and the situation of persons with disabilities in the community; to provide students with the information necessary for an understanding of the social oppression of PWD, which takes place at different levels and in different fields of social life; to familiarize them with the existing legal framework to protect the rights of PWD; to draw attention to the existing institutional mechanisms for the social inclusion of PWD; to provide insight into the need for the development of alternative support services for people with disabilities for independent living in the community and equal participation in all aspects of social life

5 The book is a result of studying the various theoretical approaches in understanding the phenomenon of disability, as well as the analysis of current legal regulations which are the basis of institutional practices in Serbia of significance for PWD. Also, it includes life stories of people with disabilities that best illustrate the situation of these persons in Serbia and the need to build effective mechanisms for social inclusion and full respect for their rights.
