Key Term Chromatography Chromatography is a separation technique used to separate mixtures with coloured components. E.g. Inks, dyes, and food colouring. Interesting fact Chromatography is a widely used technique in science. Many different professions use this technique to discover what chemicals make up a substance.

Student reading activity How does Chromatography work?
Think of chromatography as a piggie back race. At the start line you’ve got a number of different chemicals, each one individual with different properties. As the solvent rises up the paper and the race begins(the mobile phase), the solvent carries the chemicals up the page. Some chemicals are able to rise up the paper faster than other as they are more soluble in the solvent, therefore they’re easier to carry. Whereas, some chemicals are less soluble and more difficult to carry up the page. As the solvent rises higher some chemicals get left behind and stick to the paper (stationary phase). Eventually, there should be a spread of chemicals across the filter paper.
