Pericles 3 Goals: - More democratic: created direct democracy - Stronger: Built up navy to strongest in Greece - Beautiful: built Parthenon, bought gold, ivory, & marble with “empire’s” money. Focus on Arts : Drama & History - Tragedies & comedies – Athens full of thinkers - Herodotus & Thucydides wrote events of day – first historians!

- Socrates : believed in truth & justice. Arrested, tried, and put to death. - Plato : pupil of Socrates. Wrote The Republic about an ideal government with social classes - Aristotle : pupil of Plato. Wrote books summarizing knowledge. Developed scientific reasoning.

Alexander the Great Takes rule from father Philip II after he captured Greece Moved east & conquered Persia there, then south to take Persian territory in Egypt Crowned Pharaoh in Egypt & founded Alexandria, city at mouth of Nile R. Conquered all the way east to Indus Valley area then turned back. Fever & died at age Kingdom broken into 3 reigns

Cultural Diffusion : spread of ideas from one culture to another Hellenistic Culture : blending of Egyptian, Persian, Greek, and Indian cultures. Alexandria : center of commerce. Broad roads lined w/ statues, large palaces, lighthouse called Pharos, library and museum.

Greek Myth Storyboards Do Not Write on Biographies!
Read about Greek God with your group Outline important information from the biography. Come up with 12 pictures or “slides” that you think are important to your god. Write a caption or story to go along with the pictures. Number the pictures on the storyboard in the order you would put your presentation together.
