Alexander’s Empire Rise of Macedonia: Began with Alexander’s father;
Philip II became king in 359 BC. He set three goals to accomplish:

Alexander’s Empire 1. Create a strong Macedonia.
2. Unite the Greek city-states. 3. Defeat the Persian Empire. Philip II accomplished goals 1 and 2 but he was assassinated before completing #3.

Alexander’s Empire Alexander became the new king at age 20.
He took up his father’s goal and by 327 BC, he had conquered the Persians and was known as the “King of Kings”

Alexander’s Empire Alexander established his capital in Babylon and married a Persian woman. His primary goal was to unite West and East → combine the best of Europe, Asia and Africa.

Alexander’s Empire Alexander died in 323 BC after a short illness at the age of 32/33. Division of Alexander’s Empire: 1. Africa → Ptolemy (Cleopatra’s family) 2. Asia → Seleucus 3. Europe → Antigonus

Alexander’s Empire By 31 BC most of Alexander’s Empire was again united → by the Romans.

Hellenistic Culture As a result of Alexander – a great new culture emerged. Hellenistic Culture – culture blended with Egypt, Persia and Indian influences…why? Koine – the popular spoken language used in Hellenistic cities.
