BASIC PROFESSIONAL TRAINING COURSE Module XIV Surveillance Case Studies
Version 1.0, May 2015 This material was prepared by the IAEA and co-funded by the European Union. 1
2
INTRODUCTION Students should be divided into groups
For international course it is preferred to form mixed groups. Each group should spend 2 – 3 hours discussing the cases and prepare a short presentation for the plenary session.
3
Surveillance of integrity of barriers
For following statements each group should specify which barrier is under surveillance and complete the list of necessary measures to verify the integrity: Test of penetration seals and closure devices; Monitoring of thermal and hydraulic conditions (flow, pressure, temperature, power,…) ; Leak rate measurements (flow of make-up water to the primary coolant system). Systems that need periodic tightness checks, pressure tests and/or leak tests should be identified.
4
Surveillance of safety systems
Discuss the surveillance of safety systems needed. Functions of SSCs and functions associated with SSCs considered in surveillance programme should be listed. Surveillance tests on safety relevant instrumentation and control should be described.
5
Surveillance frequency and extent
Frequency of surveillance: Objectives of surveillance frequency should be discussed; Determination of surveillance frequency should be explained; Optimization of surveillance frequency should be discussed. Extent of surveillance Adequate extent of surveillance should be discussed. Periodic re-evaluation of surveillance frequency and extent Need of re-evaluation should be explained; Considerations of re-evaluation should be discussed.
6
Surveillance methods and functional tests
Monitoring gives an immediate indication of the plant status Discuss which are the parameters that are monitored; Find some examples of these parameters. Discuss the verification of: Calibration; Response time. Importance of functional tests should be discussed. Requirements for test equipment should be discussed.
7
In-service inspection programme
Discuss when is in-service programme needed. Which are the influences on components that may result in changes in material properties. Main factor in ageing of the reactor pressure vessel should be discussed: What does embrittlement depends on; How is the end of life fluence estimated; Discuss why is surveillance programme for reactor pressure vessel needed and how it is implemented.
8
In-service inspection – extent, schedule, methods
Systems and components with greater extent of in-service inspection should be listed. Discuss why. Inspection schedule should be discussed: Inspection intervals, Inspection periods. Different methods of in-service inspection should be described.
9
Pressure and leakage testing
Testing of pressure retaining systems and components should be discussed.
10
GROUP PRESENTATIONS 10 1 – 2 hours should be devoted to group presentations and discussions. Each presenting group should prepare a set of slides. At the end of all presentations the lecturer should lead a discussion about presentation and give some conclusion about surveillance programmes. The views expressed in this document do not necessarily reflect the views of the European Commission.
