This is not designed to make someone a counselor or a doctor/health professional it is to help all employees achieve a basic understanding of what mental health problems are basic skills on help or get the person struggling to the help they need. In 2015, a joint Vale/USW/CGA working group was formed to work on initiatives to address mental health. The Mining Mental Health Study was conducted in In 2016 a Mental Health Strategy framework was developed called MINES for Minds.

Monitor – for signs when someone may be struggling.
The 5 actions of MINES guide us on how to help someone who may be struggling with their mental health. Monitor – for signs when someone may be struggling. Intervene – in a caring way. Ask. Listen. Normalize – break STIGMA, It’s Ok to talk about mental health! Encourage – each other to seek support when needed. Support – each other in getting to the help

To get HomeSafe, mental health is just as important as physical health. The month of October was selected as Mental Health Awareness month for Ontario Operations. We encourage everyone to “Take 5 for Mental Health”.

Banner. Sign the banner to pledge to “Take 5 for Mental Health”. MINES for Minds poster/board will be going up at the plant with some information about mental health. Take 5 to check it out! Ballots for Prize Draws. Enter a ballot for a chance to win some nice prizes. Risk Management Shares around mental health will be communicated

What is happening this month?
An Ontario Operations Video about Mental Health will be shared with all teams. Take 5 to recognize World Mental Health Day (Oct 10th). An announcement about enhancements coming to our Employee and Family Assistance Program will be made. “Take 5 for Mental Health” Month Ballot Draw will happen at the end of the month Good Luck! DID YOU KNOW? October 1-7 is Canadian Mental Illness Awareness Week.
1 in 5 Canadian employees have a mental health condition they are managing. 30% of Vale disability claims are related to mental health. 30-40% of Vale lost days due to disability are due to mental health (#1 reason for days lost)

DID YOU KNOW? Mental health problems are common and are the fastest growing and leading cause of disability worldwide! 60-70% of people with mental health problems don’t seek the help they need. Stigma is the primary reason people don’t seek help. 4,000 Canadians die by suicide each year (11 per day) 76,000 Canadians attempt suicide every year (210 per day)

Someone who may be struggling: May not recognize it in themselves, May deny they are struggling, May think they are the only one and don’t want to appear “weak” or “less than capable”, May think there is no help or help won’t work anyway, May think it will resolve itself or they can manage it on our own.

5 common signs someone may be struggling:
A sudden or gradual change in their emotions or behavior from how they are normally. More frequent problems controlling their emotions (anger, anxiety, agitation or moody). Withdrawal and isolation from others around them. They stop taking care of themselves, caring about themselves and alienating others. They stop being optimistic about life and become overwhelmed easily.

Talk to someone about what you are feeling and get the help you need.
CARE Talk to someone about what you are feeling and get the help you need. Care and encourage others to seek assistance if needed. Access the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) or other supports. See the MINES for Minds poster and pamphlets for contact numbers.

PLAN Learn about the commons signs of when someone may be struggling Read the MINES for Minds poster and/or talk to a mental health representative.

ACCEPT Sometimes we need some help with our mental health. It’s Ok to reach out for help! Look for signs in yourself and others around you and help them.

LEAD Set an example Access support for yourself or help someone else. Share your story with others
