2 Charles I wanted to help the protestants fighting in the thirty years war. In order to get money, Parliament made him sign the Petition of Right The Petition of Right states: 1) The King would not imprison citizens without DUE CAUSE; 2) The King would not tax without Parliament consent; 3) The King would not house soldiers in private homes; and 4) The King would not impose martial law in peacetime. Charles I dissolves the petition because he felt it took too much power. (makes parliament upset) Creates religious problems when he tries to force all protestant groups to follow one religion. (makes the common people upset)

1641- Parliament passes laws to reduce the power of the King. Charles I tries to arrest the members of Parliament and the people begin to revolt. English Civil War Led by Oliver Cromwell, supporters of Parliament fight the Royalist (supporters of the King). King Charles I is captured, tried for crimes against the citizens, and executed. This is the first time a king is executed while he is still king. The Monarchy and the House of Lords in Parliament are abolished and a new constitution is created. (creating a new government)

4 Oliver Cromwell Military Dictator

5 Oliver Cromwell tears up the constitution and rules as a military dictator. He creates laws based on puritan ideology. Outlawed are things like the theater, music, drinking, dancing, gambling, etc. When Oliver Cromwell dies, Parliament and the people choose to go back to the pre - civil war lifestyle. They invite Charles II to rule as king.

6 King Charles II Charles II begins what is known as the Restoration. He restored the monarchy to the thrown of England. He ends the strict Puritan rule of Cromwell. Charles II brings back the theater, dancing, sporting events, etc King Charles II and Parliament created HABEAS CORPUS, which gives a prisoner the right to know why he/she was arrested or to be brought before a judge.

8 James II, a catholic king, violated laws by appointing other Catholics to high government positions. He also began to support France and King Louis XIV, endangering the League of Augsburg. When Parliament objected, James II moved to abolish Parliament. Protestants and Parliament invited James II’s oldest sister, Mary, and her husband, William of Orange, to fight James II for the thrown of England

11 Mary was married off to William at the age of 12
Mary was married off to William at the age of 12. Living in the Netherlands, Mary was often home sick and eager to come back. After the Glorious Revolution, Mary and William were to rule England equally. William, though, was more concerned with events in the continent. Louis XIV and France invaded his Netherlands in William left Mary behind in England to go back home to the Netherlands. With William and Mary, England created a Constitutional Monarchy, where Parliament and the King/Queen ruled equally. Parliament also formed a cabinet (advisory group) and a Prime Minister (the leader of Parliament [equivalent to our President])

12 English Bill of Rights 1689 Parliament and Mary also create the
which limits the power of the monarch. It States: 1) The King cannot suspend the laws of Parliament; 2) The King cannot tax without the consent of Parliament; 3) Members of Parliament have freedom of speech in Parliament; 4) Citizens cannot be punished for petitioning the King about grievances.

13 Queen Mary dies in 1694 of smallpox
Queen Mary dies in 1694 of smallpox. King William III continues his efforts in the Netherlands and does little as a ruler in England. Parliament rules in the absence of a Monarch. He dies with no children and the crown goes back to a daughter of James II named Anne.

14 Dies from a blood disease
Queen Anne Daughter to James II Queen Dies from a blood disease Queen Anne rules for 12 years in peace with an increasingly powerful Parliament Queen Anne dies with no children and the search for the next King goes all the way back to the children of James I. The descendents of one of his daughters that was married to German nobility will become the next in line to rule England.

15 House of Brunswick (aka Hanover)
King George I ( ) King Great grandson to James I Family has been living in Germany for almost 100 years. George is a German, he does not even speak english. Lived in Germany half the time and Parliament ran the country without his input.

16 King George II (1683-1760) King 1727-1760
Son to George I George II spent most of his youth in Germany. He was able to absorb more English culture than his father and was more active as King.

17 King George III (1738-1820) King 1760-1820
Son to George II George III was the King of England during the American Revolution. He will die from a blood disease that begins to show in 1765 (years before the revolution). He will slowly lose his grip on reality and is debilitated by the disease. His son rules for him starting in 1811 and he will die in windsor castle crazy, blind, and deaf.
