2 Welcome to First Grade

3 First Grade Math First grade math is learned through hands-on experiences and rigorous games. Concepts will be taught whole group and then practiced in stations. Students will meet with small groups to meet individual needs.

4 Math Number sense (knowing 39 has 3 groups of ten and 9 ones)
Comparing numbers (22 > 13) Addition and Subtraction to 20 (the goal is to know addition facts to 9 without using fingers!!) Shapes & their attributes (a triangle has 3 sides) Making and interpreting graphs. Measurement: length, weight, and time.

5 Writing We learn we all have lots of stories to tell about our lives and the things we enjoy! We learn stories are best told in small moments. We will write different genres of writing: Fiction, non fiction, poetry and personal narrative. We will learn the editing process by working with our teacher and partners to improve and enhance our writing.

6 Reading We read DAILY in class and through this students will learn to read more fluently throughout the school year with more accurate comprehension. We read various genres including fairy-tales, folk-tales, poetry, realistic fiction, non-fiction, historical fiction and non-fiction. We learn to depict things in stories such as the author’s purpose, identifying the setting, characters, main idea, and sequence of events.

7 Keys to becoming a SUPER reader!
By the end of 6th grade, Student “A” will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days. Student “B” will have read only 12 school days. Which student would you expect to have better vocabulary? Which student would you expect to be more successful in school and in life???

8 Word Work Spelling by the Rules is a program that teaches the rules on how words are put together, their patterns, and they way sounds can be spelled. Students will participate in hands on activities that provide opportunities for discovery and practice of each new rule. Each week a new rule will be taught. The goal of this program is for students to be forever spellers….not memorizers!

9 Science Science is taught in a visual & hands-on manner.
We will be learning about magnets, the states of matter, taking care of our earth, natural resources, and plants. As scientists, we will do experiments and keep a science journal.

10 Social Studies Describe the origins of customs, holidays, and celebrations of the community, state, and nation such Independence Day and Veterans Day. Identify contributions of historical figures such as, Sam Houston, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr. Identify characteristics of good citizenship and participation in government, respectfully holding public officials to their word, and voting. Explain state and national patriotic symbols, including the United States and Texas flags, the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, and the Alamo.

11 Homework Read…Read…Read!!! Please have your child read a book to you for 10 minutes each night. Books will be sent home each night for your child to read to you. Library books can be read by your child, with your child, or to your child! Ask students about the rule that they are studying in Word Work and practice saying/spelling these words throughout the week.

12 Report Card First grade report cards are standard based.
Instead of taking and averaging grades from the beginning of a grading period to the end, we assess where students are as we finish up the 9 weeks. Students receive a number 4-1 to show where they are 4: Demonstrates high achievements of grade level expectations. 3: Meeting grade level expectations (**THIS IS GREAT!!**) 2: Progressing towards grade level expectations 1: Not yet demonstrating grade level expectations

13 Report Cards Here is a visual that helps explain the standard-based grading system!! (thank you Chino Valley Unified School District)

14 Thank you for all of your support!
