People began telling stories long before they started writing them down Oral tradition: passing down stories told aloud from generation to generation (storytelling) Three Reasons for storytelling: people were illiterate and couldn’t read or write to entertain to pass down information

Genres of Oral Tradition
Folktale/folklore: exists only in oral tradition, story which not only reflects values and traditions, but encourages heroic/correct behavior. Usually the author is unknown (Bloody Mary) Tall Tales: stories which are about people who perform impossible feats. They are usually exaggerated through time so include a lot of hyperbole (extreme exaggeration) (Paul Bunyan) Fable: short story with animal characters that teaches a lesson or moral (tortoise and the hare) idioms/proverbs: short sayings that express a common truth or familiar experience (don’t cry over spilled milk)

Legend: widely told story (location and culture specific) usually with some basic in truth (jersey devil, lockness monster, sasquatch MYTHS: Originated in oral ancient tradition (many share similarities) Entertaining story with a serious purpose (explain or instruct) Myths focus on gods Explain: origin, natural phenomenon, death, nature NATURAL PHENOMENON: happenings in nature (ex: earthquakes, floods, sunrise, characteristics of animals, etc.) EPICS: Long narrative stories about a large- than-life hero who embarks on a journey. FAIRY TALES: Main characteristics are magic and romance.

Bell Ringer Answers Explain what folk traditions are and the reasons why this was the origin of all stories. Folk traditions are the passing down of stories generation to generation through word of mouth (storytelling.) The three reasons this was the origin for stories were because people couldn’t read or write, to entertain, and to pass down information.
