3 Our Time Together Working Together: Connection and Community
Inquiry and Sharing: Capacity Building Learning Exploring Applying and Planning Share with participants that each module will have consistent components, however, the flow may look different within each module (Some modules will have a learn section and follow with exploring, and then move into a new learning piece followed by exploring. Other modules may have one learning section followed by exploring and then move right into applying and planning).  As you share the components with the participants, highlight which icon is associated with which component.  Working Together: Connection and Community (circle with people) Inquiry and Sharing: Capacity Building (question mark) Learning (book) Exploring (magnifying glasses) Applying and Planning (pencil) Art of MATCH- module 1

4 Objectives for Today: Provide an overview of the M.A.T.C.H. series
Describe and clarify different forms of professional development Describe how effective professional development can enhance relationships, interactions, and self- efficacy Reflect on current practices as a M.A.T.C.H. professional. Share the bullet points with participants.  Facilitator Note: Ask participants to focus on bullet point three (describe how effective professional development can promote professional identities, self-care and wellness, and enhance relationships and interactions). Share that as we learn more about different forms of professional development and reflect on our own practices, we’ll consider these ancillary benefits to effective professional development. Time allotted for this section: 20 minutes Art of MATCH- module 1

6 Shared Agreements ENGAGE Silence phones, please
Limit sidebars during whole group Assume positive intent Hold confidentiality Take care of yourself What else? Review the slide with participants. Ask the group if there are ideas or requests they would like to ask of you and their colleagues to help make the environment conducive for sharing, understanding and learning from and with one another. Using chart paper, write down and capture their responses.  Ask participants if there are other agreements to add; ask if everyone can agree to these.  Facilitator Tip: Keep this piece of chart paper with agreements and bring to each session. You can change the slide to include additional participant agreements for the upcoming sessions.  Art of MATCH- module 1

7 Reflection and Connection
Think about your role(s) as a MATCH professional On your table tent, write 8-10 words, phrases, or symbols that describe your role and the work that you do Share your name and something you wrote on your table tent Ask participants to think about their role as a MATCH professional. In addition to their name, ask participants to write and include on their table tents  8-10 words, phrases or symbols they believe describes their role and the work they do. Share with participants that the goal of writing on the table tents is to help us prepare for sharing and getting to know one another - in essence, creating a community in the room.  Once participants have finished, (prompted with click), share the 3rd bullet point and ask that each person share their name and something written on their table tent.  Facilitator tip: Decide how many items to ask participants to share based on number of people, previous relationships, and amount of time (try to keep this activity to a max of 15 minutes).  Art of MATCH- module 1

8 Inquiry and Sharing: Capacity Building
Time allotted for this section: 30 minutes Let participants know you are moving into inquiry and sharing. Explain that for each module, there will be opportunity to share and discuss current happenings in their work, as well as ask questions and for feedback.  Facilitator Note: The ways in which the group will experience inquiry and sharing within each module will differ.  Art of MATCH- module 1

9 MATCH Cafe In your group, answer the prompt – offer ideas, suggestions and support to others in your group! When time is up, move with your group to the next prompt Repeat this process Record two ideas from your group on the chart paper at the front of the room Divide participants into 3 groups (or more if needed to keep each group under 5 or 6 people.) If the whole group is under 6 people, you could simply discuss the prompts all together. Ask each group to move to a table and answer the prepared prompts. You could use chart paper for people to track their responses within groups, or have a more unstructured discussion. After an appropriate period of time, ask groups to rotate to a different table to respond to a different prompt. Possible prompts: What has been challenging in your MATCH work? What is going really well for you in your MATCH work? What questions do you have about your MATCH work or your role? Art of MATCH- module 1

10 Learning Time allotted for this section:  Art of MATCH- module 1

11 Forms of Professional Development
Training Technical Assistance Mentoring Coaching Consulting Share with participants that we will be using the NAEYC PD document to explore five forms of professional development. While there are other types of professional development outlined in the document, for this activity we have chosen to focus on the five that seem most relevant to MATCH work (training, TA, mentoring, coaching, consulting).  You may want to refer participants to the full document for further learning. Art of MATCH- module 1

12 Forms of Professional Development (PD)
Read the handout related to your assigned form of PD Work together to create 2-3 sentences that summarize this form of PD Each group member needs to be ready to report out with the summary sentences Learning Group: 1- Training 2 –T/A 3 - Mentoring 4 - Coaching 5 -Consulting You will need to divide participants into groups of five. This will be their "Sharing Group". Next, ask participants in each group to count off by five. Their number will represent their “Learning Group.” Ask the 1's to sit together as a Learning Group, 2's, 3's, etc. Provide participants with the NAEYC document on PD (pages 7-12). Assign each Learning Group one of the five forms of PD as shown on the slide. Provide time for participants to read through their form of PD and then work together to create 2-3 sentences that summarize what their form of PD is all about.  Once finished, participants can gather back into their Sharing Group. (Move to the next slide, #13).  Art of MATCH- module 1

13 Forms of Professional Development (PD)
Share your summary of each type of PD Discuss similarities and differences of each type of PD Each person in their Sharing Group will share the summary sentences from their Learning Group, and then the Sharing Groups can compare and contrast forms of PD, using the NAEYC document as a reference. Art of MATCH- module 1

14 Exploring Time allotted for this section: 30 minutes
Facilitator Tip: It will require careful time management to stay within the time limit for this section. Let participants know you are going to explore these forms of PD even more through two activities: Creating a visual representation of their work as MATCH professionals, and considering their professional philosophy. Art of MATCH- module 1

15 Forms of Professional Development (PD)
Create a visual representation of your role and how it overlaps with each form of professional development Provide participants with blank paper and markers. Facilitator Note: While there are some ideas on the slide, this activity allows for creative freedom, and there is no expectation that what participants draw will relate to the possibilities shown in the graphic on the slide. Facilitator Tip: Make sure you allow enough time for the Professional Philosophy discussion that follows this slide, while staying within the allotted 30 minutes for the Exploring section of the module. Art of MATCH- module 1

16 Professional Philosophy
Answers: Why do you do what you do? Clarifies what it is to be a MATCH professional. Guides behaviors Promotes personal and professional growth Encourages effective practice Use this slide to set the stage and introduce ways to think about what a professional philosophy is and reasons to have a professional philosophy Facilitator Note: The word philosophy: "love of wisdom." Art of MATCH- module 1

17 Professional Philosophy
How might you benefit from having a defined philosophy? Guide a group discussion about past experiences with professional philosophy and the importance of articulating a philosophy. Facilitator Note: If participants do not bring up professional identity, self care, wellness, enhanced relationships and interactions, you may wish to do so. Facilitator Tip: As time allows, and to encourage digging deeper, an additional prompt might be: How does helping adults learn contribute to your sense of self? Art of MATCH- module 1

18 Components of a Professional Philosophy
Definition of responsive guidance View of the client Goals and expectations of the MATCH professional/client relationship Discussion of approaches Discussion of evaluation Lead a brief discussion about the components and why each might be important. Ask participants if they have a professional philosophy. If yes, have they revisited it lately? Does it include all of these components? If not, why not? Would they consider creating or articulating a professional philosophy? Art of MATCH- module 1

Art of MATCH- module 1

20 Self-Assessment Fill out the Self-Assessment based on the MATCH Knowledge Areas and Competencies Provide each participant with a copy of the Self-Assessment and encourage quiet reflection as participants read through and fill out the self assessment individually. Facilitator Note: You might encourage participants to use the needs assessment (see Applying and Planning section) as they think about and articulate a professional philosophy when this module is over. Art of MATCH- module 1

21 Action Planning Choose one knowledge area from the Self- Assessment that you would like to focus on Choose one of the standards, resources, or competencies from this knowledge area that you would like to focus on Use the action planning form to write a goal and action steps to meet that goal After completing the self assessment, lead a brief discussion regarding their thoughts and feelings about that experience. Then provide Handout 1B and ask participants to set a goal and create an action plan to meet that goal. Facilitator Note: Encourage each participant to set a small, measurable goal that can be achieved within the next few weeks. Art of MATCH- module 1
