Twyman Clements Daniel Erb Zachory Jacobs Dr. James Lumpp Introduction On-Orbit The CubeLab standard is a small form-factor payload standard for the ISS providing a mechanical mount, power, and data transfer capabilities for a variety of payloads. The system is designed in such a way that after the NanoRack platforms are in place in the ISS, only small payload modules need be carried to the station in standard Cargo Transfer Bags (CTB) aboard any of the existing and planned cargo vessels that service the station (e.g., Progress, ATV, HTV). After the operating life-span of the individual CubeLabs they can be disposed of in Progress vehicles or can even be returned on Soyuz and DragonLab. -NanoRack Platform 1 was launch on April 5th 2010 aboard STS-131 -NanoRack Platform 2 will be launch aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-132 -Both will be installed in an EXPRESS Rack located in the Japanese Experiment Module and ready for experiments by June 2010 CubeLab Modules: Leveraging the CubeSat Standard -1U, 2U, and up to 4 x 2 U Volume Available -Experiment possibilities involve: environmental, Biological, microfluidics, technology demonstrator, etc. - ICD between CubeLab modules and NanoRack platform can be found at: 1U 2U 4U 4 x 2 U NanoRack Platform Current Infrastructure -Provides conditioned power and data connectivity to individual modules -Leverages USB mass storage standard for data transfer -2 NanoRack Platforms were built in the Space Systems Lab at the University of Kentucky and fully tested at Marshall Space Flight Center in late 2009 CubeLab Operation Control Center is currently under construction in the Space Systems Lab at the University of Kentucky -Allows for on orbit real time video and voice communication with ISS astronauts for assistance with CubeLab experiments -Comprehensive support for small missions from flight project concept through the design, development, flight qualification, launch and operation of spacecraft and payloads CubeLab Frame 1 CubeLab Modules 1 & 2 Future -NanoRack Platform 3 is in the development process -Scheduled to be installed in the ISS in late 2010 -Currently taking flight reservations Functional Testing
