3 STS 124 – Buzz in Space It was launched on May 31, 2008 with Shuttle Discovery Stayed on ISS until November 2008 Part of the partnership between Disney and NASA to “encourage students to pursue studies in science, technology and mathematics”. (STS stands for: Space Transportation System)

4 Toy Requirements – ISS Environmentally safe in ISS
Familiarity of behavior in 1-G Representative of all partners Prediction of varying behavior Simple to video and document Not duplicate behavior of previous toys

5 BUILDING TOYS IN SPACE

6 Let’s Explore WHAT IS Gravity ? WHAT IS Microgravity?
WHAT ARE Newton’s 3 Laws? EXAMPLES OF TOYS IN SPACE: Ball and Cup AKA: Kendama Paper Airplane Astrojax Hand Helicopter Climbing Bear “Comet “

7 BRAINSTORMING List some toys you know of on earth that you play with . IT CAN’T BE VIDEO GAMES How do you think toys will function in microgravity ? Prediction for Toy Behavior in Space. For example: Can a basketball be thrown into a basket in space? Will a wind-up toy submarine swim in air?

8 Law of Inertia An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. This law is often called “ the law of inertia".

9 It Is the Law of Applied Force
The acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the amount of force being applied to it Acceleration = force mass The greater the mass (of the object being accelerated) the greater the amount of force needed (to accelerate the object).

10 For every action there is an equal and opposite re-action.
It Is the Law of Motion For every action there is an equal and opposite re-action. The rocket's action is to push down on the ground with the force of its powerful engines, and the reaction is that the ground pushes the rocket upwards with an equal force.

11 LET’S BUILD “ COMET “ The Climbing Bear
Get supplies from teacher String Bear to cut out Tape Straw ends YOU bring your: Smile : ) & enthusiasm Scissors Coloring utensils Get supplies from teacher String Bear to cut out Scissors Tape Straw ends Coloring utensils
