1 What is a Motor?

2 What is a motor? Motor – a device that changes electrical energy to mechanical energy that can do work.

3 Electric motors involve rotating coils of wire which are driven by the magnetic force exerted by a magnetic field on an electric current. They transform electrical energy into mechanical energy.

4 Electric motors are everywhere
Electric motors are everywhere! In your house, almost every mechanical movement that you see around you is caused by an AC (alternating current) or DC (direct current) electric motor.

5 A simple motor has six parts:
Armature or rotor Commutator Brushes Axle Field magnet DC power supply of some sort

6 What is the difference between an AC motor and a DC motor?
While both A.C. and D.C. motors serve the same function of converting electrical energy into mechanical energy, they are powered, constructed and controlled differently. The most basic difference is the power source. A.C. motors are powered from alternating current (A.C.) while D.C. motors are powered from direct current (D.C.), such as batteries, D.C. power supplies or an AC-to-DC power converter.
