Chapter Four: Density and Buoyancy
4
Density The mass of the object per unit volume
Expressed in units of g/ml or g/cm³ It’s a characteristic property of all matter All objects have a specific density and it can be used as an identifier Density equals mass divided by volume…… or density equals heart.
5
4.1 Density There are two other forms of the equation.
Mass equals density X volume Volume equal mass ÷ density
6
Displacement In a graduated cylinder or other measuring device, place a known amount of water. Add the irregular object and measure the increase in volume. This is the volume of the object, as long as it is submerged
7
Density On the Atomic Level
More dense materials have a more tightly packed group of atoms and molecules. Less dense materials have a less tightly packed grouped of atoms and molecules.
8
Density and States of Matter
Solids are usually more dense than liquids and liquids more dense than gases. Water is less dense as a solid than a liquid.
