1 bellringer In your composition books, answer the questions below in complete sentences. Rank these units from the smallest to largest: micrometer, nanometer, kilometer, centimeter, meter Write 3,800 seconds in hours, and minutues. Convert 1,200 meters to millimeters

2 2.1 measuring mass & volume
Davis

3 Which item has more mass??
Bike car

4 What is mass? Mass: the amount of matter in an object.
The basic SI unit of mass is kilogram (kg) the kilogram is too large of a unit to be convenient for measuring small masses therefore you would use 1 gram (g): a unit of mass smaller than a kilogram. There are 1,000 grams in 1 kg. Matter: is anything that has mass and takes up space. EVERYTHING IS MADE UP OF MATTER. Example: a car has more mass than a bike. Why? Because the car contains more matter (it takes more plastic, steel, and glass to make up a car than a bike. More Matter = More Mass

5 Mass vs. weight Weight: a measure of the pulling force of gravity
Mass is ALWAYS the SAME no matter where you are, but weight can CHANGE depending on which planet you are on.

6 What is volume Volume: the amount of space taken up by matter
- The SI unit of volume is cubic meter (m3), however smaller units include cubic centimeters (cc or cm3), liters (L), and millimeters (mL).

7 Measuring the volume of liquids
1. use a graduated cylinder (it has markings that show volume in (mL)). 2. read the mark at eye level. 3. the surface of liquid forms a curve called a meniscus. Read the volume at the center of the meniscus. Measuring the volume of solids Multiply length times width time height

8 The displacement method
Used to find the volume of an irregular shape Displacement method steps Fill a graduated cylinder with 50 mL of water. Place the irregular object in the water (notice the difference from where the water is to where it moved to) Read the new volume on the graduated cylinder Subtract the new water level from the original water level. This gives you the volume of the irregular object.
