2. A New Governor!
After Pérez and is friends were killed, the leaders of the revolt gathered in Santa Fe.
August 10, 1837 they chose José Gonzales as Governor
Was a farmer, not a ruler
Revolt begins to fall apart
Disagreements about the laws
Some wanted freedom from Mexico
Some wanted to kill all opposed to revolt including Father Martínez
Rebels were planning to attack people south of Santa Fe

3. Revolt Not Finished January 1838, rebels raise new army
Wanted Gonzales as Governor
Armijo had taken the office against their will
January 27, 1838 Armijo’s men march north and win the Battle of Pojoaque near La Cañada
Armijo orders rebel leaders and Gonzales executed
Armijo remains as Governor for the next 9 years

4. Texans invade New Mexico
Texas had won it’s Independence from Mexico in 1836
The Republic of Texas claimed the Rio Grande as its south and western border
New Mexico and Mexico said the Texans were wrong
Summer 1841, In a Texas-Santa Fe expedition, approached New Mexico
Claimed they were traders
Carried orders to take over Santa Fe if not opposed
Texans never made it to Santa Fe—they got lost on the Plains!
Roving Indians stole their horses and they ran out of food.

5. Armijo Captures the Texans
Armijo was prepared to face the Texans
Raised army
Led his men to the eastern plains
As the lost Texans wandered into the New Mexicans, Armijo arrested them
They arrested Texans were taken to Mexico City
They were tied together and walked the whole way
Mexico released the men and returned them home a year later

6. The Texans Texans returned in 1843 near Mora
Texans attacked New Mexicans on the Santa Fe Trail were 23 New Mexicans were killed
New Mexicans Feared the Texans
Mothers would warn their children to be good or they would be given to the Tejanos when they came back

7. Protecting New Mexico
To protect New Mexico’s borders Armijo began issuing land grants
Most grants went to American traders who became Mexican citizens
16 million acres of land facing Texas and the United States were given to help protect against Indians and invaders
