1 Things to study In 1845 Texas became the 28th state of the United States During Early Statehood Texas was forced to define the border and expand the population. Sam Houston was the first and third President of Texas Lamar was the second President Jones was the fourth and last President Slavery continued to spread during the Republic of Texas Texans voted to join the U.S. because many came from the U.S. and wanted their home to be part of the U.S.

2 Things to Study Sam Houston believed in peace with the Native Americans. He used the Texas Rangers to enforce Texas favored annexation because the U.S. would pay their debt. Cash crop- A crop grown for the purpose of being sold Many immigrants came to Texas to own land The primary reason the U.S. didn’t want to annex Texas in 1837 because it would start a war with Mexico
