The Kingdom of Norway

Location Norway lies between latitudes 57°S and 81° N, and longitudes 4°W and 32° E. Norway comprises the western part of Scandinavia in Northern Europe. The rugged coastline, broken by huge fiords[峡湾】 and thousands of islands, stretches 25,000 kilometers and 83,000 kilometers including fjords and islands.

Climate Because of the Gulf Stream【墨西哥湾流】 and prevailing【盛行很广的】 westerlies【西风带】, Norway experiences higher temperatures and more precipitation【冰雹】 than expected at such northern latitudes, especially along the coast.

Environment Throughout Norway, one will find stunning【极好的】 and dramatic scenery and landscape. The west coast of southern Norway and the coast of northern Norway present some of the most visually impressive coastal sceneries in the world.

Economy Norwegians enjoy the fourth highest GDP per-capita in the world. Today, Norway ranks as the second wealthiest country in the world in monetary value【货币值】, with the largest capital reserve【公积金】 per capita of any nation. The standard of living in Norway is among the highest in the world.

Resources Norway has extensive【大量的】 reserves of petroleum【石油】, natural gas, minerals, lumber【木材】, seafood, fresh water, and hydropower【水力发电】. The country maintains a Scandinavian welfare model with universal health-care, subsidized【补贴的】 higher education, and a comprehensive social security system.

Demographics Norway's population numbers roughly 4.9 million. Most of the population is Norwegians, a North Germanic people. The Sami people traditionally inhabit central and northern parts of Norway and Sweden, as well as in northern Finland and in Russia on the Kola Peninsula【科拉半岛】。 Another national minority are the Kven people who are the descendants of Finnish speaking people that moved to northern Norway in the 18th up to the 20th century.

Other groups recognized as national minorities of Norway are Jews, Forest Finns, and Norwegian Romani Travelers (a branch of the Romani people【罗姆人】, not to be confused with non-recognized Indigenous Norwegian Travelers.

Languages The North Germanic Norwegian language has two official written forms, Bokmål【博克马尔语】 and Nynorsk【尼诺斯克语】. Both of them are recognized as official languages, in that they are both used in public administration, in schools, churches, and media. Several Uralic【乌尔拉语系】 Sami languages are spoken and written throughout the country, especially in the north, by the Sami people.

Norway's culinary 【厨房的】traditions show the influence of long seafaring 【航海的】and farming traditions Norway is a land of tradition, exemplified 【例证】by its rustic stave churches【手工粗糙的木条教堂】 and its folk dances【民族舞,民间舞】. But Norway is also modern. This technologically advanced nation is rich in petroleum and hydroelectric energy.
