5 Why is it BAD???? Copyright is a form of protection given to the authors or creators of “original works of authorship” Literary works (which includes computer software) Musical works, including any accompanying words Dramatic works, including any accompanying music Pantomimes and choreographic works Pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works Motion pictures and other audiovisual works Sound recordings and Architectural works Copyright law in the United States is embodied in federal laws enacted by Congress. The current copyright law, the Copyright Act of 1976 (as amended), is codified in Title 17 of the U.S. Code.

6 It is the law!!!!!! You cannot take something from another and say it’s yours.

8 How do you use someone else’s works?
Paraphrasing Quoting

9 Paraphrasing Involves putting a passage from the original material into your own words. Paraphrased material is usually shorter than the original passage This should be written naturally, as yourself. Teachers know the difference between how an adult writes and how a middle school student writes

10 Paraphrasing sentence examples:
Original: Police in New Jersey say a man told officers that he fled the scene of an auto accident because he didn’t want to deal with his girlfriend yelling at him. Paraphrased: A man in New Jersey seemed to think that leaving the scene of a car crash and being arrested was a better option than listening to his girlfriend. He told police that he fled because he didn’t want to listen to her yell at him.

11 Original: Giraffes like Acacia leaves and hay and they can consume 75 pounds of food a day.
Paraphrased: A giraffe can eat up to 75 pounds of Acacia leaves and hay everyday.

12 Examples of paraphrasing paragraphs
Original: A 68 year old Gastonia man says he scared off two men in ski masks trying to break in his home with his gun he keeps on his walker. He then taped a note to his door saying if they tried to break in his house again, he will be waiting for them. Paraphrase: Two men attempted to break into a 68 year old man’s home; however, they were scared off by the gun the man kept on his walker. Afterwards, the man taped a note to the door warning that he’d be waiting for the burglars if they came back.

13 Plagiarism violates the copyright law!!!!!
What can happen if you plagiarize? Students found guilty of violating a school’s plagiarism policies can face: Failing the assignment Your work being destroyed Failing the class Suspension for a few days, a semester or a year Expulsion from school (college, university) Can result in a legal action Plagiarism violates the copyright law!!!!!

14 How do you legally use something?
Cite the source!!!! Do not take credit for something you did not do or say Why? Shows that you have done proper research Shows responsibility Readers can track down sources used

15 How to cite!! Many, many sites out there that do it for you. You need to do it in MLA8 style Eisenhower suggests you use this one: Use  create a bibliography that will ensure you are not plagiarizing. To use this correctly, you will need to have all the information about the resource and input them into the correct fields. You are still responsible for finding the correct information and putting it into the correct fields. Feel free to watch the tutorial but ask for headphones so you can listen. A new feature in Easy Bib is a tutorial for you to follow and QUICK CITE. Quick Cite is when you just type in the ISBN number in one box and it will fill in the rest of the bibliography for you.

16 There’s a link on the Eisenhower library page….
