1 1 Sam 8:1-5 Now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel. 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. 3 But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice. 4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, 5 and said to him, "Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations."

2 Jesus in the Old Testament
Call for a King

3 Points to Consider Bridging the Gap The Story – Calling for a King
Jesus in the Story

4 Bridging the Gap The children of Israel sojourned in the land of Egypt for 430 years. When they went to Egypt there were 70 strong and came out with an army of 600,000 fighting men. God fulfilled the great nation promise.

5 Bridging the Gap Joshua took the whole land and divided it among the tribes. God fulfilled the Land Promise. After the death of Joshua the people forsook the Lord. God would allow their enemies to oppress them.

6 Bridging the Gap They would cry out to God, and he would have pity on them and raise up a judge to deliver them. When that judge died, the people left the Lord and started worshipping idols again. It was a vicious cycle that went on for hundreds of years.

7 Bridging the Gap Hannah lent her son, Samuel, to the Lord.
God established Samuel as a prophet over Israel. Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

8 The Story – Calling for a King
Samuel made his sons judges over Israel. However, his sons did not follow the Lord like Samuel had done. The people knew that Samuel’s sons were dishonest, so they asked Samuel to give them a king.

9 The Story – Calling for a King
God knew that one day the Children of Israel would have a king. He gave instructions concerning how the king should treat their brethren. God told Samuel that the people were rejecting Him not Samuel.

10 The Story – Calling for a King
God points out that the people have always rejected Him. Samuel goes on to tell the people how the kings will treat them. The kings will not follow Moses’ instructions; instead they will afflict the people with burdens.

11 The Story – Calling for a King
Saul was selected as the first king of Israel. The people were delighted to have Saul as their first king. God anoints David, a man after His own heart, as the second king of Israel.

12 Jesus in the Story The New Testament starts out by emphasizing that Jesus was the son of both David and Abraham. David says that God would not allow His Holy One to see corruption. David was talking about Jesus being the Christ.
