Lewis and Clark In 1803 before Louisiana was purchased Jefferson convinced Congress to spend $2500 on a western expedition He chose army captain __________ Lewis to lead the exploration Lewis chose _________Clark as his co-leader

Geography Plants Animals Other natural features of the region They were also told to: Make contact with the Native Americans Search for a waterway from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean

The Expedition Spring 1804 Lewis and Clark left St. Louis and headed up the Missouri River They took with them: 3 boats Tons of supplies About 40 men

The Expedition In August they met Native Americans for the first time
In October they reached the territory of the Mandan tribe in what is now North Dakota Camped here for the winter Joined by Sacagawea A Shoshone who would travel with them and be a translator

The Expedition April 1805 set out again
By August they reached the Continental Divide Exciting but upsetting at the same time Hoped to see the ________________ Instead saw immense ranges of mountains

Shoshone Warriors Came across warriors
Sacagawea noticed the chief was her brother They agreed to sell horses which were needed to cross the mountains

The Expedition Crossed the Rocky Mountains and in early November they finally saw the Pacific Began return journey in March 1806 Took half a year to return
