‘Give us today our daily bread’

2. Matthew 6v9-13 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name,
Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory for ever. Amen. (NIV)

3. First prayer for our needs
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name,
Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.

4. ‘Give us today our daily bread’
A prayer of complete dependency on God.
Psalm 24v1: The earth is the Lord’s…
Psalm 100v3: God made us, and not we ourselves. (NIV)
Everything we have comes from God.
Thankfulness: What about the other 90%?

5. A prayer for our essential needs
Includes everything we need to live the lives God calls us to.
NB Different people have different callings.
For ‘needs’ not ‘greeds’: Accept ‘enough’.
‘Us/our’: A shared sufficiency.
Nothing is too small to bring to God in prayer:
‘With God everything is small!’ (R T Kendall)
Matthew 6v8: “Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” He still wants us to ask him!
‘Pray and work’: St Benedict.

6. ‘Today…Daily’ A prayer that seeks an answer ‘today’!
Matthew 6v32: Your heavenly Father knows that you need these things. (NIV)
God gives us life in daily packages: ‘Portion Control’!
Hebrews 3v13: Encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. (NIV)
We should plan for tomorrow, but not worry!
Matthew 6v34: Do not worry about tomorrow…
James 4v15: “If it is the lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” (NIV)

7. HOMEWORK!
Continue to PRAY the LORD’S PRAYER ONCE EVERY DAY in your prayers in the coming week.
Pray about some things that seem BIG PROBLEMS as though they were small for God!
Give thanks for the 90% of things you often forget God has given you!
