1 Power User Training Helping You Help Others with Footsteps2Brilliance
My Name My Title Suggested Script (5 minutes) Hello my name is __________________. I am a Curriculum Specialist with Footsteps2Brilliance. I am so excited to be here today. A little about me and why I love Footsteps2Brilliance (keep it brief). Today’s session will be very hands on. I am committed to making sure this is a useful session for you – in return, I ask you to please set aside any distractions and please speak up and participate.

2 About US Pre-K – 3rd literacy solution Mobile technology platform
Model Innovation City license creates a turnkey, community-wide literacy solution Key talking points: Suggested Script (2 minutes) Footsteps2Brilliance is a pre-K through 3rd grade literacy solution that was developed to help all students read proficiently by 3rd grade. Our unique mobile technology platform allows you to amplify yourself by connecting school and home through the smart phones and tablets that parents already own. Our Model Innovation City license allows all children within your community, even those not yet in school, to access the Footsteps2Brilliance books and games for free.

3 It works! There have been a variety of independent studies of Footsteps2Brilliance. Each study has shown that the program accelerates learning. This independent study showed that young children gain nearly a school year’s worth of vocabulary and comprehension in one month using the Footsteps2Brilliance curriculum, and 93% of 3rd graders gain an entire year’s reading level in an 8-week time period.

4 How will families access Footsteps2Brilliance?
So let me reiterate that your child can access this program on ANY DEVICE.

5 Learning Everywhere small group whole group individualized
doctor’s office grocery store on the go And this model will enable learning everywhere. (click) Like many technology programs, you will see teachers working with Footsteps2Brilliance in small groups for individualized instruction, in whole groups for collaborative lessons on an interactive whiteboard, and even in a learning center where children can work on the program one-on-one. But the learning will not stop in your buildings … You will also see parents accessing the program from devices wherever they are … in doctor’s offices, grocery stores, or even on the go. We know that kids are using these devices in these places. How wonderful would it be if this time is dedicated to high quality learning and literacy activities?

6 Getting Set Up Students each get a Super Secret Code
Families NOT enrolled in participating schools create their accounts using a Web Form. Children each get a Super Secret Code Parents get a Username & Password Students each get a Super Secret Code Staff each get a Username & Password As we get started, Footsteps2Brilliance sets up all of your students and teachers. Families in your community can self-enroll in the program, too. They will do this by completing a web form.

7 I have a login … NOW WHAT?

9 Logging In Students log in with a Super Secret Code or a Student ID
Teachers, staff, and parents log in with their username and password Next, log in with your username and password. Let’s take a few minutes to get familiar with logging in. (Read screen)

10 Tips for the Login Screen on a Mobile Device
Is the device connected to the internet? Oops! I need to log in a different way! Reset my password Have the users on this device made progress without connecting to the Internet? News and updates Which school district is using this device? Let’s look at a login screen on a mobile device. Follow along with me on your device. When was this device last connected to the Internet? Which version of the App?

11 Teachers or parents can log in first and pass their device to a student.

12 Now you need to download the books, songs, and games you want to use.
The App is like a container. Now you need to download the books, songs, and games you want to use. You can add and remove content at any time, so that the App doesn’t get too big on your device.

13 Meet the Levels Red: for pre-readers & beginning readers (PreK & K)
Yellow: for developing readers (First grade) Blue: for independent readers (Second grade)

14 Let’s Take a Quick Tour So, let’s take a quick tour of the program …
Using Reflector, show how a child would log in using a Super Secret Code. Show the Color levels Open Alps Show Full Moon Parade. Click for Audio. Click individual words. Click pictures. Show the English/Spanish toggle button. Show the color levels and choose a game to play. Point out that there are hundreds of books and hundreds of games … so you are just giving a quick taste of what this app has to offer. (This should be a 5-minute demo … no longer)

15 Tips for Managing Content
This will download a series of books. This will download the entire level. This will download a series of games. This will delete content for the entire level. Go through the various tips on the screen with them. This will turn on the buttons to delete content.

16 What am I “deleting”? Tapping delete removes the book, song, or game from the device – making the app smaller. Make sure you’ve connected to Wi-Fi at some time before deleting content. That way, your progress and creations are saved. Make sure they understand that when they delete something from the device, it can always be added back if they choose. It is not permanent.

17 Do I need Internet on my mobile device?
YES! NO! I need Internet to: Get the App Download content Update the App Report my progress I can play on the App anytime without Internet. Be very clear with them that the FIRST time they download the program onto the device they need to be in Wi-Fi. After that the device can go anywhere and be used, regardless of internet connection. Also reinforce that they will eventually (recommended 1x/week) have to go somewhere with Wi-Fi so they can upload the usage to the server.

18 Have a computer or netbook?
If you have a computer of netbook, you can access the program on the web at INTERNET IS REQUIRED WHEN USING A NON-SMART DEVICE. Access the program at: In a browser, you automatically get the full content. (No download required).

19 Teacher Resources Reports Class Management Lesson Plans
Flashcard Maker User Guides Demonstrate how to get to Teacher Resources and how to return to the Curriculum. Opens in a browser. Requires Internet.

20 How do teachers add a student?
When a new student enters a class, the teacher or administrator can go into Class Management within the teacher’s account and add that student. They will click on Class Management from the left bar and then click on the button that says, “Add student”. This will add a row to the bottom of the class list so you can enter the new student. It is important to have the student’s ID# when entering the student.

21 How do I remove a student from a class?
When a new student leaves a class, the teacher or administrator can go into Class Management within the teacher’s account and remove that student. They will click on Class Management from the left bar and then click on the button that says, “Add student”. This will add a row to the bottom of the class list so you can enter the new student. It is important to have the student’s ID# when entering the red X next to the student’s name. This will remove the student from the teacher’s roster, but the student is still in the system so he/she can be added to another class in the future if needed.

22 How do I add another teacher to a class?
When there is another teacher who needs to see the reports for students assigned to a class, the lead classroom teacher can add another teacher to her class. The teacher or administrator will go into Class Management in the teacher’s account, and click on the red “Add another teacher” button. Once you click on that button, there will be a drop down to choose the teacher you wish to add to the class. If that teacher’s name is on the list, you can choose that teacher. If the teacher’s name is not on that list, it means that the teacher is not in the system yet. You will notify your tech department and they will send the necessary information for F2B to enter the teacher into the system. Once you add a teacher to the class, that teacher will be able to see all of the students within that class and now monitor those students as the lead classroom teacher can.

23 How do I Print Student Cards and Parent Letters?
Also in Class Management, you will find buttons for Student Cards and Parent Cards. The Student Card button will allow you to print out SSC cards for each child in your classroom. This is important to do at the beginning of the implementation so they have something to remind them of their SSC. The Parent Card contains a letter to parents, signed by the teacher, telling them a bit about F2B and how to access the Parent Registration Wizard. They will go to the URL that is on the letter and sign up for their own username and password. Parents will need the username and password to download the program onto their device(s), so this is an important step for them to complete.

24 Parent Self-Enrollment (Parents in schools and in the community will use this same URL to create their own account.) Go to: If an MIC: F2B is available to all children within your community. Parents who have children not yet enrolled in school, in a private preschool, charter school, etc. can go to the SAME URL as the parents with students in the school district, and obtain a SSC for their child, as well as a username and password for themselves. They will go to the URL specific to their district, and follow the steps to the end when they will receive their child’s SSC and an with their username and password.

25 How it works: 2. Enter address to confirm parent lives in boundaries.
0. Select language. 1. Enter parent name & . 3. Enter child name and birthdate. 4. Select child’s school. If the child is in a participating school, parent will select the child’s class and enter the child’s Super Secret Code. Show the steps of the Parent Registration Wizard. If the child is in the Community, parent will accept terms and get login information.

26 Tips for Parent Enrollment
No personal information is shared. Address is used to ensure parent lives in the boundaries of the initiative. Usernames and passwords are sent to parent’s . Enter parent name and EXACTLY the same to add a second or third child to a parent’s account (up to 3 children allowed). If a student has a Super Secret Code, the parent will need to enter it. Make sure you go over this information so parents understand what is necessary for a successful registration process.
