Who are these Native Americans?
Tribes in Pennsylvania are generally Eastern Woodland Indians. Many are allied with some tribes and are enemies of others. Tribes in Pennsylvania include the Delaware (Lenape), Nanticoke, Shawnee, Susquehannock, Munsee, Erie, and Iroquois.

Homes and Shelters Depends on whether the houses are temporary or permanent. Most tribes live in wigwams or in longhouses. Many homes were located near waterways. Some villages were turned into forts to protect against attacks.

Food and Clothing Tribes could plant crops such as beans,
squash, corn, and pumpkins. Bear, deer, etc. could be hunted. Clothes were generally made from deerskins. Native Americans could purchase cloth or clothing from Europeans.

Language and Religion Most Pennsylvania Indians spoke Iroquois or Algonquin-based languages. Many Native American beliefs were based on animism: The world and everything in it has its own spirit. Ceremonies are held to honor weather changes, harvests, hunts, change of seasons, etc.

Contact with Europeans
English settlers arrived in Pennsylvania in the late 1600s. Most Native Americans were cautious of these settlers. Trading of crops, furs, weapons, clothing, etc. occurred between Europeans and Indians. Clashes over land, religion, and trade took place also...
