A quality greatly lacking in our society
People are out of control morally – 2 Timothy 3:1-5
Out of control physically
Out of control financially, emotionally, etc.

5. The Need for Self-control
An essential quality for Christian living
Self-control is emphasized throughout the book of Titus – Titus 1:7-8; 2:2, 5, 6, 11-15
Without self-control it is impossible live the Christian life!

6. The Practice of Self-control
We must control our thoughts
Thoughts are the messengers that carry the commands from the heart and mind to the body – Proverbs 23:7
We must take every thought captive and make it obedient to Jesus Christ – 2 Corinthians 10:5

We must control our actions
Controlling our thoughts must be accompanied by controlling our actions – Romans 7:14-20; Ephesians 4:20-32
It takes great effort – 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

8. The Fruit of Self-control
Freedom from the bondage of sin
Jesus has set us free from sin – John 8:31-32; Romans 6:1-7
Through discipline and self-control we can overcome the sin in our lives – Colossians 3:5-10; 1 Corinthians 10:13

Confidence that we can do all things
We have the power to live transformed lives – Ephesians 1:18-20; 3:14-21
I can do all things through Him who gives me strength! – Philippians 4:13
