1 Acidic Compounds Nomenclature
Binary and Oxy Acids

2 Acids Hydrofluoric Acid – HF Carbonic Acid – H2(CO3)
Nitrous Acid – H(NO3) Hydrosulfuric Acid – H2S Bromic Acid – H(BrO3) Chlorous Acid – H(ClO2)

3 Two different types of Acids:
Binary Acids: Acids that do NOT have oxygen ONLY 2 elements (typically) – there are a couple exceptions (Hydrocyanic Acid) Examples: H2S HCl HCN Oxyacids: Acids that DO have oxygen These have a polyatomic ion Examples: H2SO4 H3PO4 HNO3

4 Naming Binary Acids: Recall: Binary acids are acids without oxygen.
Rules for writing the names of Binary Acids: Always use hydro- as a prefix (what is a prefix) Name the element, or non oxygen containing polyatomic ion Change the ending to –ic ALWAYS for Binary Acids Add acid for the second part of the name Example: HCl Hydrochloric Acid

5 Practice: Binary Acid Compound
What is the element or polyatomic in the compound? What is the name of the acid? HF HBr H2S H3N HCN

6 Writing Formulas for Binary Acids
Rules to Follow: Always use H+ (hydrogen) for the cation What is hydrogens charge? Determine what the anion is (the second element or polyatomic) Remember the ending is changed to indicate that it is an acid, so just remember to imagine the correct ending to figure out the anion. Drop and Swap You won’t need to simplify! (Why?) Example: Hydrophosphoric Acid What is the anion? _________________________ What are the two ions: __________ and ___________ What is the formula: ____________________________

7 Practice: Acid Name Hydrogen Anion Symbol Acid Formula
Hydrochloric Acid Hydrosulfuric Acid Hydrophosphoric Acid Hydrocyanic Acid

8 Naming Oxyacids: Recall: Acids WITH Oxygen
Determine the polyatomic in the compound Change the ending: Beware: the original ending determines the new ending! If it ends in –ate it becomes –ic (carbonate = carbonic acid) “I ate it and it was ic (icky)” If it ends in –ite it becomes –ous (sulfite = sulfurous acid) “It’s ite (aight) with ous (us)” Add “Acid” as the second part of the name Examples: H2SO4 – Sulfuric Acid H2SO3 – Sulfurous Acid

9 What is the polyatomic ion? What does the ending change to?
Practice: Compound What is the polyatomic ion? What does the ending change to? Name of the Acid H2CO3 HNO2 HClO4 HC2H3O2 HBrO

10 Writing Oxyacid Formulas:
Determine the polyatomic ion Change –ic to –ate (Sulfuric Acid = sulfate) Change –ous to –ite (Nitrous Acid = nitrite) Hydrogen (H+1) is the cation/Polyatomic is the anion Drop and Swap the charges/numbers Phosphoric Acid H+1 PO4-3 H3(PO4)

11 Practice: Name of the Acid What does the ending change back to?
What is the polyatomic symbol and its charge? Compound Formula Nitric Acid Chlorous Acid Carbonic Acid Hypobromous Acid
