12. What do I need to know? We see the moon only by reflected sunlight.
Light from the sun is the form of light rays or radiation.
Light rays travel in straight lines, parallel to one another so only one half of the moon can be lit by the sun at any one time.
Clouds and shadows have nothing to do with different lunar phases.
If the moon, earth, and sun are in a line (180 degree angle) we see either a new or full moon and there is a possibility for an eclipse to occur.
If moon is between earth and sun, the lighted side is away from the earth, none of it is visible from earth and we have a new moon.   Solar eclipses can only occur at this phase.
If the moon is on the side of the earth away from the sun, all of the lighted side is visible as a full moon.  A solar eclipse can only occur at this phase.
If the moon and the sun are at a 90 degree angle from one another, we will see only half of the lighted side.  This will be either a first or last quarter moon.

The total or partial blocking of one object in space by another.
When the moon’s shadow hits Earth or Earth’s shadow hits the moon.
Two types of eclipses
Solar- when the new moon blocks your view of the sun
Lunar- when the Earth blocks the sun’s light from reaching the moon

15. Solar Eclipse Two types Only occurs during a new moon
Total-experienced when the umbra passes over a specific area and the moon completely blocks the light of the sun
Partial-experienced in the penumbra and the moon only covers a part of the sun
Only occurs during a new moon

16. Lunar Eclipse Two types Can only occur during a full moon
Total-experienced when the moon passes into the Earth’s full shadow (umbra) making the moon appear bleary or colored.
Partial-experienced when the moon only partly passes into the Earth’s umbra.
This occurs because the Earth, moon, and sun are not quite in a line
Can only occur during a full moon

19. Tides The periodic rise and fall of the level of water in the ocean.
Everything has gravity-the earth is being held in place because of the sun’s gravitational pull and the moon is being held in place because of the Earth’s gravity.
What do you think would happen if something fluid or flexible were in a gravitational pull?

20. Tides
The gravity of the sun and moon can make the water on Earth bulge
This makes the Earth slightly egg-shaped!
Imagine wearing a big t-shirt with lots of extra fabric and your friend comes toward you with the vacuum attachment.
Your shirt is going to start being pulled toward the vacuum making you bulge!
This is the effect that the sun and moon have on Earth’s waters!
The moon has more effect than the sun.

22. Sometimes, the sun and the moon line up (what phase of the moon would you see?), and you get a special tide.
A spring tide has the greatest difference between consecutive high and low tides.
The combined gravitational force of the sun and the moon make this happen.

23. Sometimes, the moon, the sun, and the Earth all make a right angle (what moon phase would this be?).
A neap tide has the least difference between consecutive high and low tides.
The moon is pulling in one direction and the sun is pulling in a different direction!
