5 INTRODUCTION: Search for answers to these questions in today’s Scripture: What does the preacher say about the O.T. ceremonial system? What does the preacher say about the atoning sacrifice of Jesus? What two things did Jesus’ sacrifice accomplish?

6 Hebrews 10:1-4 10 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

7 Hebrews 10:5-7 5 Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me. 6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure. 7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—in the volume of the book it is written of Me— To do Your will, O God.’”

8 Hebrews 10:8-10 8 Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), 9 then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

9 Hebrews 10:11-14 11 And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. 14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

10 Hebrews 10:15-18 15 But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, 16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” 17 then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” 18 Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

11 INTRODUCTION: We were created for communion with and the enjoyment of God, but we lost these things in the fall of our first parents. Only Jesus can restore that lost communion through His obedient atoning work. We need forgiveness and renovation; and that is exactly what Jesus provides for us through His atonement.

12 THE FORESHADOWING OF THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:1-4)
10 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

13 THE FORESHADOWING OF THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:1-4)
God designed the ceremonial system under Moses to foreshadow the real sacrifice that was to come.

14 THE FORESHADOWING OF THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:1-4)
10 The Law is a shadow of the good things that are coming, not the real things themselves (ceb).

15 THE FORESHADOWING OF THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:1-4)
10 The Law is a shadow of the good things that are coming, not the real things themselves. It never can perfect the ones who are trying to draw near to God (ceb).

16 THE FORESHADOWING OF THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:1-4)
The ceremonial law cannot get you to God; the ceremonial law cannot bring you back into communion with God.

17 THE FORESHADOWING OF THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:1-4)
2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins.

18 THE FORESHADOWING OF THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:1-4)
2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. The O.T. ceremonial sacrifices did not accomplish forgiveness because they continually were repeated.

19 THE FORESHADOWING OF THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:1-4)
3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.

20 THE FORESHADOWING OF THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:1-4)
3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. The old covenant ceremonial system was not able to forgive. It merely pointed forward to the sacrifice that would. The Law could not give us what we need.

21 THE FORESHADOWING OF THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:1-4; Jer. 31:34)
17 “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

22 THE FORESHADOWING OF THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:1-4; Jer. 31:34)
17 “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” The preacher contrasts the O.T. ceremonial system with the promise of the new covenant, which anticipated God no longer remembering our sins.

23 JESUS IS THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:5-10; Ps. 40:6-8)
5 Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me. 6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure. 7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—in the volume of the book it is written of Me—to do Your will, O God.’”

24 JESUS IS THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:5-10; Ps. 40:6-8)
8 Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), 9 then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second.

25 JESUS IS THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:5-10; Ps. 40:6-8)
Christ came into the world as the real sacrifice in obedience to the Father’s will.

26 JESUS IS THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:5-10; Ps. 40:6-8)
5 “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me.

27 JESUS IS THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:5-10; Ps. 40:6-8)
5 “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me. 6 Sacrifice and offering You did not desire; my ears you have opened (Ps. 40:6).

28 JESUS IS THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:5-10; Ps. 40:6-8)
5 “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me. 6 Sacrifice and offering You did not desire; my ears you have opened (Ps. 40:6). 10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

29 JESUS IS THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:5-10; Ps. 40:6-8)
One of the great themes in the O.T. prophets (especially the later prophets) is that obedience is better than sacrifice.

30 JESUS IS THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:5-10; Ps. 40:6-8)
We should not perform the rituals of the sacrificial system and feel all holy, when we don’t really love the Lord with all of our hearts and in every part of our lives.

31

32 “Sacrifices You have not desired, but behold, as it is written in the scroll of the book of the law, I come to do Your will.”

33 JESUS IS THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:5-10; Ps. 40:6-8)
5 Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me. 6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure. 7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come – in the volume of the book it is written of Me -- to do Your will, O God.’”

34 JESUS IS THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:5-10; Ps. 40:6-8)
Jesus is saying that David’s words were actually and ultimately fulfilled in Him.

35 JESUS IS THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:5-10; Ps. 40:6-8)
O.T. saints were not forgiven by the blood of bulls and goats; they were forgiven because Jesus died.

FORGIVENESS & TRANSFORMATION CAME THROUGH THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:11-18; Jer. 31) Christ’s work brings about the fulfillment of the new covenant promises. Christ’s obedience to the will of God perfectly and effectively reconciles us to Him.

FORGIVENESS & TRANSFORMATION CAME THROUGH THE REAL SACRIFICE (Heb. 10:11-18; Jer. 31) Jesus’ work is finished, it’s perfect, it’s done; therefore we are forgiven once and for all, because Jesus is not standing; He’s sitting at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
