Winslow Homer (February 24, 1836 – September 29, 1910) American landscape painter and printmaker, best known for his marine subjects. Born in Boston, Massachusetts Loved art from an early age After high school stated working as a magazine illustrator When he was 23 he moved to New York and started taking painting classes. He also opened his own art studio. When the Civil War began he was sent to front lines to sketch battle scenes and camp life, the quiet moments as well as the chaotic ones. After the war Homer went to Paris to study landscape painting for a year. He then went to England , where he lived in a coastal town for two years and began painting the ocean. When he returned to America, he moved to a fishing town in Maine and continued to paint seascapes. Later in life he also become interested in painting wildlife and sport fishing.
