Quotes Abraham Lincoln’s “Emancipation Proclamation” is one of the most idolized pieces of literature in American history. However, a closer read of the document shows that this immortalized text is falsely viewed as the catalyst leading to the end of slavery. Mark Krug explains, “How did it happen that the nation, North and South, white and black, was convinced that the Proclamation was an important turning point in the history of the war, when in fact…the proclamation was nothing of the sort. Slave states such as Kentucky and Missouri were left untouched by the words of the Proclamation” (Krug 98). Krug opens the argument that the proclamation was not in fact a turning point in the war because it applied only to states that had withdrawn from the Union, leaving slavery virtually untouched in the loyal Border States. This notion is rarely discussed and rendered the document useless at the time of its implementation.
