7 Basic Face Shapes Linda Ferguson Designs

2 Determining Your Face Shape
Pull your hair back in a ponytail or wear a headband You may also want to have a tape measure handy for precise measurements Using your hairline and jaw line as a reference, what is the general shape of your face: wide, average or narrow? Is your forehead wider than your jaw or vice versa? Are they the same width? To get an accurate reading, use the tape measure. At this point, you will also want to note if your cheekbones are a prominent feature of your face. Are your cheekbones the widest part of your face? You also need to measure the length of your face and compare it to the width. Using your tape measure, measure from the middle of your hairline to the point of your chin. Look at your chin. What is the general shape: round, square or pointy? Linda Ferguson Designs

Oblong Face Shape Linda Ferguson Designs

4 Right Hair Style Heavy top layers fall into a rounder shape
Bangs almost have the vertical length making the face and chin appear shorter and more balanced This same shape will work on any other hair texture. Linda Ferguson Designs

5 Right Hair Style This is a very nice hairstyle shape to compliment an Oblong face The bangs in the front help to make the face appear shorter While the layered sides and back that kick out create needed width Waves or curls would work just as well, even slightly shorter if required Linda Ferguson Designs

6 This is the wrong hairstyle for the wrong face shape!
The worst thing that an Oblong face shape can do - is to make their faces appear even longer, as is the case with this hairstyle Height on top is the obvious culprit and should be avoided at all costs This is the wrong hairstyle for the wrong face shape! Linda Ferguson Designs

7 While the flimsy sides do nothing to build width.
Wrong Hair Style The middle part creates more vertical length While the flimsy sides do nothing to build width. This hairstyle lacks body and needs to be shortened in shape (not length). Linda Ferguson Designs

Square Face Shape Linda Ferguson Designs

9 Linda Ferguson Designs
Right Hair Style Sides are soft and wispy - falling onto the jaw line and hiding the squareness Side sweep of the bangs creates a diagonal illusion that loses any focus on the squareness The graduated sides and back angle up creating a whole new shape that ‘frames the face’. Linda Ferguson Designs

10 The waves are opened and have curved lines that are softer to the eye
Right Hair Style This long wavy hairstyle with side-swept bangs is just perfect for a Square face The waves are opened and have curved lines that are softer to the eye Bangs also help to create the perception of shape to the eye making it appear to be rounder rather than square Another good choice would be to have a wispy framing layers in straight, wavy or a curly texture. Linda Ferguson Designs

11 Wrong Hair Style The shape of this cut make the Square face look even squarer The straight across bangs shorten the length of the face While the chin length sides creates width and it draws attention to the jaw area This shape should be avoided. Linda Ferguson Designs

12 Wrong Hair Style This hairstyle looks very heavy and solid all over - making it a poor choice for a Square face The heavy bangs create a very square shape But once they are added to the straight sides and the back, the result is very square and angular The sides need layers The bangs need to be less heavy. Linda Ferguson Designs

Diamond Face Shape Linda Ferguson Designs

14 Right Hair Style Great style for a Diamond face shape
The bangs help to shorten the length of our models face The side part helps make the face appear wider by creating the illusion of one larger shape which the eye focuses on The sides are soft and wispy and curve into a round shape which is very flattering. Linda Ferguson Designs

15 The bangs help make the face and chin area appear less long
Right Hair Style This a great cut which adds hair in all the right places and compliments the Diamond face shape The bangs help make the face and chin area appear less long While the wispy hair to the shoulders creates a squarer shape - creating width not length This hairstyle will work on all textures and will look great with layers as they will make the appearance of the style even softer. Linda Ferguson Designs

16 Wrong Hair Style The height created on the top - particularly in the middle - only emphasizes a Diamond shape face The short bangs also only add to the illusion of the height What we need here is ‘Width’ rather than height. Linda Ferguson Designs

17 Wrong Hair Style The wispy long lengths only make our models face look much longer While the absence of any bangs once again creates a longer shape this is not flattering Avoid this hairstyle if you have a Diamond Shape Face. Linda Ferguson Designs

18 Linda Ferguson Designs
Triangle Face Shape Linda Ferguson Designs

19 While no bangs make the face shape appear longer
Right Hair Style This short layered hairstyle is perfect in how it puts the hair exactly where it's needed It makes our models triangular face shape look balanced and proportional The heavy top layers allow hair to be rounder and fuller above the ears While no bangs make the face shape appear longer Bringing attention to the forehead and away from the jaw line is flattering. Linda Ferguson Designs

20 Right Hair Style This is a very nice hairstyle shape which suits our models Triangular face shape to a tee The sides fall softly onto and away from the jaw line creating cover in the right places The side swept bangs work well to create diagonal direction drawing attention to the eyes The zig zag part creates some height and builds length into the look While an all over rounded shape frames the face nicely. Linda Ferguson Designs

21 This hairstyle is the worst possible shape for Triangular faces
Wrong Hair Style Too wide, too square! This hairstyle is the worst possible shape for Triangular faces The sides only make the jaw area, which is already large naturally, look even wider and bigger The heavy bangs make the face shape appear even shorter and wider which leads the eye to the sides and width once more The hairstyle follows the actual shape of a Triangular face shape instead of compensating and adjusting it. Linda Ferguson Designs

22 Wrong Hair Style Another good example of the wrong hairstyle on the wrong face shape! Triangular faces are pear shape and are narrowest at the top forehead region and widest at the jaw line chin area This hairstyle follows that same shape This style kicks out at the bottom and sides and only draws further attention to the jaw region While the heavy bangs, although to the side, still make the face look shorter and wider. Linda Ferguson Designs

23 Linda Ferguson Designs
Oval Face Shape Linda Ferguson Designs

24 Linda Ferguson Designs
Right Hair Style This hairstyle has some height on top and features soft wispy bangs that accentuate and draw attention to the eye region This hair style works well and has no negative effect on the length or width of the models face shape Alternatively, no height or bangs would also look just as good because of her Oval shape face. Linda Ferguson Designs

25 Right Hair Style This chin length bob cut with side swept bangs sits nicely on the models Oval shape face Although the hairstyle itself has a rounder shape The chin area on the models face brings the style back in proportion, balancing it out rather nicely That is the benefit of having an Oval face shape! Linda Ferguson Designs

26 The small amount of height on top does create a somewhat round shape
Wrong Hair Style This face covering look creates the illusion of squareness on the face due to the heavy straight across bangs The small amount of height on top does create a somewhat round shape But the fact that the hair is falling onto the face is where the eye focuses and draws its conclusion of squareness Our model has lost her great Oval shape with too much hair on her face. Linda Ferguson Designs

27 Wrong Hair Style From a face shape suitability perspective, this hairstyle does nothing to show off the models great Oval face shape The feathered long layers don't work The bangs shorten the overall shape of the face Making it appear much shorter than it really is. Linda Ferguson Designs

28 Linda Ferguson Designs
Heart Face Shape Linda Ferguson Designs

29 It's simple but it is what is needed.
Right Hair Style This is a great short hairstyle that really suits our models Heart face shape The height achieved on top adds needed length that balances out what is known as a short and mostly wide face shape The absence of bangs also gives the illusion of more face and more height It's simple but it is what is needed. Linda Ferguson Designs

30 Right Hair Style This beauty has everything that's needed to make it the perfect hairstyle for a Heart face shape The top area has long heavy bangs swept to the side that shows off the forehead This creates needed vertical length The sides and back are layered and then kicked out through styling to compensate for the narrow chin that are customary with heart faces A similar shape in other textures will work just as well. Linda Ferguson Designs

31 Wrong Hair Style Definitely the wrong hairstyle for Heart face shapes
This cut positions hair where it just isn't needed The heavy bangs make our models face appear shorter and wider than it already is Next, the long wispy sides promote width Which is the opposite of what Heart face shapes require for balance This shape in any texture will not work and therefore must be avoided. Linda Ferguson Designs

32 Wrong Hair Style This wavy look shows what NOT to try if you have a Heart face shape Firstly, the heavy bangs shorten the length of the face making it look wider than it already is Secondly, the width achieved through the layers and waves once again adds width to the entire look The result is a short, wide, fat, squashed look Now you know - what to avoid! Linda Ferguson Designs

33 Linda Ferguson Designs
Round Face Shape Linda Ferguson Designs

34 Linda Ferguson Designs
Right Hair Style This hairstyle adds height and makes our round models face appear longer than it actually is People with Round faces need to add height not width, which is exactly what this hairstyle does. Linda Ferguson Designs

35 This hairstyle gives the appearance of an Oval shape
Right Hair Style This hairstyle gives the appearance of an Oval shape The sides help slim the face down, while no bangs show off more forehead and therefore a longer shape The off centre part helps divide the face evenly making it also appear longer rather than wider It's a nice look! Linda Ferguson Designs

36 Linda Ferguson Designs
Wrong Hair Style This example shows how adding width rather than length to a Round face shape is ‘Disastrous’ The bangs shorten the face while the hair that kicks out - only accentuates width and roundness This is a nice hairstyle but is definitely NOT good for Round face shapes. Linda Ferguson Designs

37 The bangs are a nice touch but cover the face up too much
Wrong Hair Style This hairstyle shows how a round hairstyle and a Round face really don't complement each other Although having this much volume at the crown can sometimes be a good thing This style adds width to the sides which makes the face appear larger and incredibly round The bangs are a nice touch but cover the face up too much It is a lovely hairstyle - but it is just not suited to a Round face shape. Linda Ferguson Designs
