I am going to study French this year.
Form To be going to Function To express a personal intention or make a prediction about what you know/feel/see. Examples I am going to study French this year. The sea is going to be very rough this afternoon, so don’t go swimming.

Form. Future Simple Function Tomorrow will be my birthday.
To express (with shall and will plus the infinitive of a verb) a future fact, a sudden decision, an offer, a threat, a promise, an opinion about the future, a probability especially after think, suppose, expect, doubt if. Example Tomorrow will be my birthday. It’ all right I’ll do the shopping. I will take you in a car if you like. I suppose we’ll manage without the car.

Form. Present Continuous to be (am, is, are) +Ving
Function To express planned or personally scheduled events. Usually used with principle verbs such as: come, go, begin, start, finish, have, etc. Examples He’s coming tomorrow afternoon. What are we having for dinner? I’m not seeing my friends until Friday.

Your train leaves in ten minutes.
Form. Present Simple. Function. To express something to happen in the certain future, something already arranged as in a timetable or programme. Examples. Your train leaves in ten minutes.

The political leaders are to meet next month to discuss the crisis.
Form. is to/ are to (to be to) Function. To express an instruction or something arranged officially. Examples. The political leaders are to meet next month to discuss the crisis.

The 100 metre race is about to start any minute now.
Form. about to/ due to Function. To describe actions that are expected to happen, usually in the very near future. Examples. The 100 metre race is about to start any minute now.

Common future time expressions include:
Next(week, month, year): in+( a moment/an hour/a week/a year….): In X’s time(amount of time, e.g. in two week’s time): Tomorrow, soon, soon: Time clauses( when, as soon as, after, in case, untill)+ simple present (e.g. I will telephone as soon as I arrived).
